I just checked in after a while...WOW...you guys are unbelievable...I'm the OP ...you guys sure have taken this to new heights...since I started this.... I have to say....

Henry is a true trooper....

who cares who's gay?...what is this? 1916?

Butterfly has an open mind....Ddubba (or whatever) sure doesn't..

Katy is a great pop singer...

I guess it makes people feel good to shit on others hard work....

I have kissed a girl (once or twice) and I kinda liked it too

Did we ever find out who mixed this single?

The dude who mixed this did a great job. Most of us here couldn't have done as good a job. He/she deserves a little praise.

Does anyone here actually go to work?

Nick

I'm not sure pop music is the right place to look if you're looking for great art or artists.

but what makes you think there was hard work involved? I mean if we're supposed to throw heaps of praise on people for hard work, maybe we're praising the wrong people.

usually when you work on your craft in an industry for a while you can tell when someone does good work....you know like a carpenter can tell if another carpenter is doing quality work...it's not really rocket science and it's not all subjective either...you don't seem to comfortable with appreciating others work...that's cool...why bother?

I'm not knocking this all that much. I really don't care about it.

I admire some people's work GREATLY...why should I admire this? That seems silly. Does everyone have to admire every pop song that comes down the pike?

You must have known when you posted this that it would get shit on. This sort of music, these sorts of artists, always get shit on. Madonna made a career out of getting shit on.

Why would I assume that this song would get shit on...I think it's a great pop song....and I didn't say "admire GREATLY" I said appreciate...and if you're too cool for this song then stop talking about it. I find it hillarious when someone shits on a thread then qualifies it by saying "but I don't really care what you think anyway". Its' like walking up to someone's door, pissing on it and when they open the door you say "but I really had to go" Guess what? I don't care that you don't care...so there.... na na na na boo boo back. I tell you what.... you qualify as a grade one asshole, however, if you post a mix of yours that is just as good or better, I'll concede that I'm the asshole. What do you say? Mister "I'm above this sort of music and these artists". Do you have the balls and the mix to back yourself up?

Great Pop Song? An opinion at best....Mine = Nope... but ultimately irrelevant....and it's POPular so let's make the answer, "yes."

Great Artist?....Ahhhh....there's the rub.

We are able to make mixes cheaper and quicker these days, yeah? YET...sales of recorded music are failing miserably and continue to fall...

(If you blame the internet you will have to wear the Behringer dunce cap and sit in the corner!)

AND.....It is nearly impossible to establish an act that is credible enough for a career that lasts more than 2 singles even if the act IS credible!

THAT means that we have lost and are loosing the public faith. They don't believe in what we do...be it on PT Cut n' Paste or in one live take to 2" tape.

I think it's all down to what an act has to say. Ani DiFranco has some poppy sounding songs about girls kissing girls...BUT, that is NEVER the only point she makes. Some of Ani's records don't sound that good....but holy shit!....they rip your heart out. The Magnetic Fields.... anyone heard 69 Love Songs? It's a Pop masterpiece. Are they on the VMA's? Why not? .....because we live in a faithless, careerless, artistic dark age where Pop stars who have nothing to say get all of the air time and frat boys steal the publishing.

By no means is it my intent to disparage the engineer who mixed I Kissed A Girl, or to disregard the hard work, the blood and sweat that goes into a mix like this...not at all, but, what if that engineer had worked on something that people will care about 100 years from now? It would be a masterwork for the ages.

Sadly, big business is not interested in long term investments like that anymore.
.....now throw in the FCC , The Telecommunications Act of 1996 and the CERN LHC black hole and....BAM! Here we are.

PS...JK about CERN....I love looking for Higgs Bossons

i don't see anything in the lyric regarding whether she would or wouldn't have sex.

imo, the song captures a pretty common dynamic for young ladies in this day and age. it does so in a pretty simple fashion, but hey, it's pop.

Just to clarify my position on everything:

I think the sexual messages in the song are backwards. The lyrics reinforce the idea that same sex contact is 'wrong' and 'naughty'.

The lyrics state that in a moment of confusion, she kissed a girl, but she certainly wouldn't have sex with her. The video ends with a happy return to her hetronormative surroundings complete with model boyfriend.

It upsets me that these types of messages are clearly aimed at children who are already caught up in their personal sexual confusions, especially when I have to decode it all for my 11 year-old niece.

And before you dumbo Amercians jump on me with your freedom of speech comments, I'm not saying that the video shouldn't have been made and she shouldn't make money out of it. This is just Analysis, ok?

And if you're an adult that is titilated by Katy and her story about kissing a girl, and her sexless video, I think your a very sad excuse for an adult and you should go and discover some actual porn.

Well, America seems to be ****ed up...mtv has a great comic by the name of Russel Brand. An edgy comic sure. He makes fun of promise rings or GW and hes crucified while all the acts on the awards show seem to be extras from a prono site. The juxtaposition of promise rings and the dance acts was quite hilarious. I mean, what is rock and roll? Fo **** sake. Its vanished in the last 15 years. Everything is edited and disneyfied to death. With just the right amount of violence and sex, but not too much. We want it but we don't want it. Holy crap. We aren't helping our repressed prutian image we have around the world

I can't believe there is such a discussion on the lyrical topic of that song.

they just make what sells.

the song is on the tv here all the time now too but I can't remember anyone here feeling offended or confused by the lyrics... I mean wtf?

if it's past 9 pm here the girls in the video could take their strap ons and bend over and noone would actually wonder. now if that's sad or not.. I don't care so much.

the song is catchy, the production whatever...
but what was a bit embarrassing: she was on a tv show here last night singing live... pretty awful, also unsexy dancing/movements and herself looking like a mix between a housewife and joker, complete turnoff. pretty ironic, considering the theme of the song.

So, after listening to the full album in proper quality I really gotta correct my last post. The production is really good, very colour- and playful (esp. "Ur so gay"), fits the songs very well.
its usually not my favourite kind of music but I can't deny that "I kissed a girl" is a damn earwig and I don't get rid of it. Help!

so, kudos to the people involved, it seems you've done your job very well.

I think as far as pop songs goes, this is great little catchY chune, capitalizing on obvious club/porno trends as two girls kissing and non lesbos engaging in this act just for attention. I think the production is pretty sweet as well, I may buy the song just to be able to hear it on my monitors. This song is also capitalizing on the electro trend off the chorus with the obvious saw/square synth bass, some of you trainspoters that dont watch all markets might miss that. I didnt quite see who produced it because in the beggining of the thread 4 different dudes were mentioned, whoever did definitely knows the trends well.

Im starting to totally look/hear pop music differently lately, used to be a slight hater, because, well, in the type of music I do produce, house music mainly, your raised to think pop is the enemey. Now I realize that mentality is fools of the underground, that essentially need pop music to exist in order for non pop styles to thrive and be compard to.
Pop production to me is as a very challenging game, not so much art or even, should I dare say "music". You have to know every little move and trend that exists in the world and combine that to make a song that sounds like a million other songs but some how will still surprise/inspire not only the jaded listener but even other producers. Not to mention you have to compete with the biggest richest most knowledgeable producers/players in the world.
