UA 2192 + Mackie 400f?

Anyone try using these together?

I'm thinking of getting a 2192 to do primo A/D/A conversion, and using my 400F to be a bridge between the 2192 and my DAW (using SPDIF).

Any thoughts?

I would think it would be fine. We do the same thing here, with a 2192 -> AES/EBU input on our Digi 192. We use the 2192's clock as the master, through wordclock output.

Once the analog signal is digitized, it's just being sent through you interface to the DAW and I would assume, as long as everything is setup correctly that it should get recorded bit for bit perfectly through the spdif inputs on your mackie.

So would I have to clock the 400F to the 2192?

Yes, the 400F uses all 24 bits for audio data, so I'm fairly certain it'll get everything coming off the 2192.

You generally want to clock from whatever is sending the data, unless you've got a master clock like a Big Ben or some such thing that everything in your studio is clocking too.

YOu could slave the 2192 to the mackie, though some people claim that clocking to a better external machine will give better results... but I believe this only holds true if you're using your Mackie's analog section. I've never tested it, n'or do i care. The 2192 is my master clock in studio at all times... it's just the way it is, around here.
