recommend a high quality pair of small powered monitors for songwriting

I just moved and need to write in a place that I cannot make that much noize in. Basically, I gotta get ride of my KRK V8 (damn those things are loud) and get some small frame monitors. what do you suggest... I would like to keep under a 6 in woofer.

here is what I am thinking...

ADAM Artist
or
1030 Genelec
NS10 ( but I would rather not)

Any other ideas are welcome.

what do you guys think...
bring on the lists of good small sized monitors.

If anyone is interested in my pair of KRK V8s email me at onedependent@gmail.com we can talk.

PMC DB1S-A. I just heard them. They sound amazing!
And not too expensive either.

Dynaudio BM5A. Killer--and very reasonably priced. Usually Dyns are much more expensive.

Dynaudioacoustics.com

They're a grand a pair.

Funny you bring them up because I heard them next to the PMC's and although being a Dynaudio fan (I have big M3A's myself) the BM5A disappointed next to the PMC's.

I prefer the TB2S-A too, but since he asked for small writing speakers I recommended the smaller ones.

They sound very similar with the TB2S-A's having slightly more bass.

The stereo imaging is awesome. The Dynaudio sounded very undefined and muddy in the bass next to the PMC's.

I use ATC 20's (active) myself. But they are far to heavy and expensive for a small writing setup.

Thats why I post questions like these, I have never heard of PMCs. Thanks for that link. They look really good. I wish I could check them out in philly, but there arent any high end dealers in thee City that have this stuff around. I think the 6.7in. woofer on the dynadios might be too big. Thanks, i will research those PMC further. I wish those ARTists were out so I caould get a good opinion on those aswell.
best

Just if you are interested, the dealer where I heard the PMC's had also the Adam ANF11's and they sounded horrible compared to the PMC and Dynaudio's.
Of course we know that speakers are a very subjective matter. Just my personal opinion...

even the NS10's that were next to the ANF11's sounded better!

I DID A/B the Dynaudio BM5s with Genelec 8040As, which are twice the price, and I liked the Dyns better. The Genny's did not sound two times better.

I'll tell you what I really really like, the Dynaudio BM6A. They are tight, clean, clear, detailed, the low end is focused and defined, the high end is smooth, not hyped, they havd mazing front-back depth, and....the midrange is forward (not like Genelecs) more like an NS10. People who used to like NS10s love these because they are like NS10s, only....WAY better.

However, they are like $1700 per pair.

That's what I have used as my7 main nearfields for years. Now the BM5A is good, but it's a far-cry from the 6A!!

PS, there's a guy in Philly who can probably hook you up with Dyns. PM me if you want to get in touch with him.

I have a passive pair of PMC TB2's driven with a C-Audio amp that I love but I'm thinking of getting a pair of active DB1's as well for the ultimate in high-quality portable monitoring to go. The DB's have the same tweeter as the TB's and there isn't much sacrifice in bass response either apparently, although I haven't A/B'd them side by side. The DB's use Flying Mole digital amps, which are cheaper than the good but pricey bolt-on Brystons that the active TB2's use.

I do like the BM6A's and these would make an excellent 2nd choice - they are perhaps a little less fussy with positioning than the transmission-line design of the PMC's.

The current TB2S-A's use Flying Mole amps as well. These amps perform very well imo.

Hey Dr Delta, this is totally off topic, but your Avatar reminded me that I saw Eraserhead in college in the spring of '79 or '80. It was David Lynch's student film or whatever, and it was touring colleges.

I have never been so disturbed by a film. I had nightmares and felt literally sick to my stomach for days.

Later, I became a big fan of his work, but I still get a sick feeling when I see that Eraserhead icon.

Sorry to give you that sick feeling again ;-)

I'm a big David Lynch fan as well, hence the avatar

To get back on topic: hearing the soundscapes and weird effects out load on nice monitors is cool
