M160. How often you blowing the ribbons?

I'm on to doing my second one in a year .. and this without much use, and I thought I was being careful. They're my drum mics of choice, so it's getting expensive!

On the same track then .. anyone have any good sources for the replacement ribbon/capsule assembly?

Any feedback appreciated.

Had mine for what 3 years a pair.
Used as room, overhead and guitar amp mics.
Mine are fine. touch wood

When you say drum mics.. Are you saying snare, toms and kick?

Hey--

As Dave asks--are you using them to close-mic drums? If so, I'm surprised you've only lost two!

The 160 is a wonderful mic, but I'd never get closer than 3-4 feet to a drum with it. Guitar cabinets, about 18"--the very tight polar pattern takes care of the roominess you'd get at that distance with some other mics.

I use 160's on both acoustic (as long as player plays loudly enough) and electric guitar and brass instruments, particularly trumpet at which it excels. In those applications, I do lose about one a year, but I consider that "cost of doing business."

As far as getting them fixed, the only place I know is beyerdynamic themselves.

I use them for high hats for the last 6 months or so and haven't had one go out. How are you storing them? The ribbon can strech if not stored properly. That could be a cause.

Should have been clearer .. yes, drum OH, plus on acoustic instruments. Not game try one on a guitar amp, and have a Royer 121 for that anyway.

Storage .. hmm. Suggestions/tips?

That sums it up, I'd say. I didn't hesiate putting my new 160 in front of a Mashall cab, it sounds great!

As a guitar player, I spend quite a bit of money on strings for my numerous guitars. Should I play them less to prevent the strings from wearing out?

Upright not flat. The ribbon will start to deform over time if you put it on it's side. Ribbons should be stored upright so the weight of the ribbon is supported.

FYI, I emailed Royer and John Jennings said that because the Royer ribbons are made with new composite materials that are much stronger this is not an issue with their mics.
