| Lives for gear | Mix + unavailable after march? this came to me today as an email from a company that I had been talking with regarding a new PT purchase. ( we since located a Mix + new in box) sounds like they maybe turning the screws. Not sure as to the accuracy of this .... > PRO TOOLS MIX : END OF LIFE, END OF MARCH... We have it on good authority that Digidesign will EOL (or End of Life) the Pro Tools Mix Hardware by end of First Quarter of 2003. All that this means is that Digidesign will no longer be selling (New or Refurbished) Mix hardware in any way. Which also means they will no longer be upgrading people to the Mix refurbished hardware as well. Our sources say that this will happen at the end of Q1 (By the end of March) so the clock is ticking... If you're receiving this e-mail more than likely we've spoken about the Mix refurb hardware (and /or) a mix refurb upgrade in the last 6 months or so. This e-mail is just to let you know that if you're looking at the Mix hardware as an option we have less than a month and a half to make it happen for you. To be clear what this means to you, is after march, the only thing that will be available is the current HD hardware, and for many of you and your particular applications (and budgets) this will put a Pro Tools TDM system out of your reach.

| In the UK it's game-over already. Digi still have very limited stock of interfaces available, but the Cores and Farms are finished. ![]()

| Did "refurb" ever get going? I didnt hear much about it... Have they repackaged and sold all the traded in cards & interfaces? Any ideas what will happen on the 2nd hand market? |

| I received the same email. I think if this is true, that HD sales are not what was expected. But what will Digi do in the future w/ all those traded in units? I herd once that the Core and Farms are only different in firmware. The bummer for owners if this is true is that it will force the value of Mix down and prbably change the upgrade path $$. I think if true it has alot to do w/PT6 as well. Maybe Digi wants to put pressure on HD upgrades and have some limited upgrade insentive when they announce it.

| I'm really desperate. What I have: Mixplus + 888/adatbridge What I need: a bit more power +better convertors. I was thinking of adding another mixfarm and convertors (RME or apogee AD16) My guess is that farmcards gonna raise or at least stay high priced on the secondhand market. RME and AD16/DA16 not so so cheap. What would you do: Bite the bullet and trade in for a HD system or go the first route?

| Lives for gear | again the motto I will cling to, ecspecially in these shakey times. PIMP WHAT YOU GOT. I'm gonna ride out the next year and a half then re-evaluate. Maybe by that time enough inroads will have been made into the DIGI dynasty to warrent a move. We'll be putting the big money into mics, outboard and marketing. oh yeah , and a nice two inch deck when one comes around ![]()

I don't feel there's any panic with having to move to HD just yet. I'll start to worry when I have to turn down jobs because I can't work in 24/96 or HD-only plug-ins start appearing. Otherwise everything's just dandy at the moment. In 6-12 months I'd hope the whole PT6/OSX/G4-G5?/Logic circus has calmed down and it will be a relatively easy decision to spend the extra money... right now? forget it! I can understand Digi canning Mix (although I think it's a shame)... I guess it's a similar situation to Apple and OSX, they've just forced users' hands into going for their current technology... and like vinyl->CD it gives them a chance to resell their product all over again to the same user base. Also, with native processors getting better all the time there's an argument for Mix looking less and less advantageous as time went by. If I was buying a system from scratch, HD's obviously better, but Mix is absolutely cool for me at the moment and I'll flog it until it doesn't do the job anymore.

| As a non PT owner and moderately infamous PT sonic basher, I have to say that HD does sound better. Fair is fair, and Digi did (finally) address some of the sonic concerns. For me, there is no better reason to upgrade any piece of gear than the fact that what replaces it sounds better. Better than what I use...........nah, of course not But it is better sounding than Mix, and that's pretty compelling for dedicated PT users, IMO. Regards, Brian T P.S. I tried to be nice, but c'mon. I had to slide at least one jab in there. |

when I do upgrade I'll be interested to hear what exactly about it does sound better, will it be more than the Digi A/D D/A hardware improvements..which I don't use anyway..

| My studio is WAY over equipped for what I charge. I've spent 4 years working my ass off to make Mix + & digital sound good, I am sure going to kick ass when I move up to a better system!!! Untill then its its the threadbare G3 / Prism Dream ADA / ProControl / Vintage outboard / Mix + route for me! My clients can wait, cashflow dictates this! I need a hit record soon! ![]() |
