auto tune rack vs. auto tune plug vs VoiceModeler *

I know that auto tune is the devil, but I have been getting clients asking if I have it. That and some of the stuff that I have been doing need it.....bad...

I have used the plug-in but never the rack. What's the difference? Does the rack work in graphic mode or is it just automatic? It looks like the rack is 20bit.

I also have a Powercore so the Voicemodeler is an option. Any one used one?

Thanks,

Reed

While "denying" that I've ever used any pitch correction of any kind, I will say that powercore one -- Intonator I think -- is the best one I've ever used. Even in the harshest setting straight-up plugged in on a lead vocal -- which I'd actually never do -- the average musician would never detect it. I never got that kind of transparency from the famous one, rack or plugin.

I had the original rack and liked the sound..it is broke right now but I definately think it sounded nicer than the plug in ( or i fooled myself into thinking it did anyhow)but it means bounceing the tracks through it which is obviously a bit of extra time and had only limited editing options, I might fix it cos I liked it...I am not sure about the newer ones.I use melodyne a lot but it is quite long winded and detailed to work with..which I quite enjoy but I can see it would not be to everyones taste..autotune plug in is very useable for certain tasks though and I would always try this first .

I never used rack version because the way I use software is not possible with hardware. I make a duplicate track of my vocal track for safety and then tune the duplicated track by selecting out of tune parts instead of putting auto-tuner on insert channel. for example singer sang the word "beautiful" and "ti" is not in tune, I will select it and preview it while tuning it. I can also tune "beau" "ti" "ful" on 3 different settings. I dont think you can use rack version on words but the whole track. Owl City`s fireflies and the whole album is example of tuning part by part and not using it with insert channel.

I have both the plug and the rack and the rack AT and the rack is really better, in fact far better. I use it for classical voice and jazz, where hearing the AT work is a big no-no! It really is inaudible when set to about 9. And you can do all that silly pitch-change stuff via MIDI. For total transparency, just track an AT version and if the voice (or whatever you are treating) is too far off pitch, comp it into the original. I have yet to find a use for the plug-in version.
