your favorite signal path for SM-7 on vocals

tell us.. tell us now..

but please just keep it real, and detail the gear you actually use, rather than gear you might use if you were able to.

The SM-7 is a new discovery for me, love it so much that I now got a second one.
I got the best results with a UA 2108 preamp. Although I often use the Chandler TG-2 or UA 6176 for vocals with other mics, the 2108 is just amazing with the SM-7. Smooth but transparent, with a very low noise floor and GREAT low-end. I choose the compressor according to the voice and style, so I don't have a SM7-specific fave but a dbx 160VU works surprisingly well.

Last time i used it for vox it was:
SM7b>Neve 1272>1176>ProTools
it was pretty much my only options at the time but i was very pleased with the results on a female vocalist.

I enjoy my SM-7 followed by an OSA MP1-L and an RNC.

Depends on the singer, the compressor and what my mood is. I've tried API 512, Vintech X73i, Adesigns MP2, Calrec PQ10s242, Avalon 737, Sytek Burr Brown and of those I would rank them something like this

1. Vintech, A Designs, API (all good but different)
2. Calrec, Avalon (usable, pretty good)
3. Sytek...ehhh not the best vocal pre

Here's a great combo for all the ITB guys.

I've been using this on male rock vocals recently:

Sm7 --> Chandler TG2 --> DAW --> Neodynium Comp ('Vocal 2' preset) --> Sonalksis Comp (fast attack, auto release, threshold to taste).

The Neodynium (with this preset) is a great "upwards" compressor and the Sonlksis rides transients in a way we're familiar to hearing. The result is a very clean sounding, heavily-compressed vocal sound that doesn't sound "squashy" during louder vocal passages.

Try it!

hard to beat the SM7 into an API/OSA or Neve/Vintech....they all sound good. I normally just use something like the dbx160x to take the tops off the really loud parts....not too much compression when tracking.

SM7 to GR NV. I then take the balanced out direct to AD and the unbalanced one goes to an RNC before hitting the AD. I usually get the compression right, but in the event I don't I like having the raw signal to rework.
