| ringing tremolo springs hey folks, What do you guys do to damp the tremolo springs on strats? Mine is a vintage style Fender with all the springs loaded. I do use the tremolo, so I don't want to do things that will get in the way of springs doing the springy business. Is there a solution to this? TIA |

| I know guitar players who think that the springs are an essential part of the Strat tone. A hard tail Strat does sound a bit different. Just some food for thought...

| Ahh, just tended to this problem myself. I have one guitar that I keep in "drop C" tuning for metal type tracking, a Hamer Chapperral elite w/ sustainiac, and found when doing tight choppy rythems, the springs rang out, making it not so tight sounding. My solution was to stuff a bit of "natural" fibre wall and cieling insulation (the white, non itchy stuff. Just happened to find some lying around) in the cavity. Has worked a treat. I suppose you could use anything similar.

| I use a small piece of foam stuck under the springs, not real tight, just enough to stop the resonance. I also rub some pencil lead into the nut to stop string sticking there. Wammy on... Jim Williams Audio Upgrades |

| it's the nature of the beast. anything you do to muffle spring vibration you will lose some tone. 5 springs will reduce it to a minimum. hard tails sound totally different. |

| I've always sandwiched a paper towel between the springs and the back plate. Doesn't seem to interfere with the spring travel and kills the resonance. |

| thanks everybody! I guess I will try out and see if it will work out... Regarding the springs being the part of Strat, I agree, and I kept it untouched for the past 10 years. It can become a little annoying on certain voicing, however... I will see if I like it muted or not. |
