Impress the Client Speakers

I am looking for a good set of speakers to use to impress the clients. Just something to crank up and blow them away. My budget is around 1-2 grand. I was looking into the B&W 600ish series. Any thoughts?

Do you have a monitor bridge? Impressing clients is what Ureis were for. I don't ever recall anyone ever mixing on them.

I see them on Ebay all the time.

I have heard urei 813's before, and I hate them. I am thinking more of a hi-fi type speaker.

Can be done. Depends on the room and who set them up.

Check out Paradigm Studio 60v.3 or Studio 100v.3 ---you can only get them used now as the v.4's are out, but the value is in the v.3's. Definitely within your price range.

Or the JBL LSR32's (also used)...will be less hi-fi sounding than the Paradigms, but still big. LSR32's are on the warm side (tonally).

Run a good amp...at least a Big Adcom, Hafler (9505) or Bryston if your studio needs a heater.

That's the idea. Every reason you as an engineer hate them is why artists love them.

You should be able to mix on JBL LSR32's, they are really midfields though and best used in a room with enough square footage. The JBL LSR28's that some of the guys use here for mixing (per their posts on some other JBL thread) are more of a high-fi sound than the 32's. I use JBL LSR32's so I can't give you a truely objective review (we tend to like what we use LOL). The LSR32's broke away from the prior 43XX and 44XX series 3-way boxes and don't have that nice warm smiley curve to them. Instead they sound very detailed/neutral, especially the mids. I've got them temporarily in a near field position and they still cut it with very good 3d image (use it as a midfield though!!). The older 43 and 44 series 3-way midfield boxes are cheap now and did impress the clients in alot of studios back in their day. Given how many studios mixed on them at the time and still got great results shows how important it is to mix on speakers you know well regardless of their lack of neutrality. I think Bruce S. mentioned mixing on the old JBL's in one of his guest forum posts.

I'm willing to bet more 60s-70s hits were mixed on 813's than probably any other sets of monitors.

I still have a pair of 813c and they still go boooom when you hit them. Guys who have only used near/mid fields monitors almost piss in their pants when you hit the 813s.

They were pretty much standard in the days before nearfields were common.

I was being a bit facetious about 813s never being used for mixing, and agree that you are probably right. They were, in my experience at some of the bigger studios in town, mostly used for checking the "big sound" and impressing clients and 95% of the mixing was done on NS10Ms or B&Ws.

You need control room depth to use them though. I'd love a pair, but would have to add renovation cost of blasting into the rock foundation of my property to have them.

Actually, and you may laugh, I would consider a pair of the new Cerwin Vega CVA28 and a couple of the 21" subs. They sound clean, go LOUD, and look good. You even get well controlled dispersion, so you don't have to worry about damping the side walls.

This makes sense. I use a cheap pair of M-Audio BX5s for flipping back and forth from my Dynaudio. I don't like the M-Audios at all but the clients love them. Go figure.
