Silverlake, Los Feliz, Echo Park CA. Studio needed

Hey all, looking for a bulletproof cool studio in Silverlake, Los Feliz or Echo Park area for 2 weeks of lock out. Place must have a good console or at least a great tracking front end. A good size open room (iso booths not needed) to be used in open recording environment (ala Eno, Lanois style..the Dylan Record). Also enough room and inputs to set up a "nailed to the floor" set of stations for - Keys, Drums, 2 guitar amps, bass, and an aux other inst. station so we can set it, forget it and jump around when needed.

Need it for Aug. 15-29th

Yes, I know - late notice.

Any help would be great.

Thank you in advance,
C.Judd

Los Feliz?

Mad Hatter Studios - Los Angeles Music Recording Studio

I have not been there since it was sold but it was a cool room when Chick owned it.

Question any other studios

Mad Hatter looks great, nice on the phone.
It's Saturday so I have to wait a few days for an answer...may be too late. Too bad as this will be a two week lock out - good money for some good studio out there.

Any other thoughts from anyone?

Lightbulb recording studios in l.a.

hey man. check out EAGLE ROCK STUDIOS, Los Angeles, CA in eagle rock.

email me at thestereobus@gmail.com for some samples of an e.p. i just recorded there. full tracking and it's cheap/awesome - and the owner, marcel, is pretty cool. the rooms and gear are great for tracking. drums sound awesome and the console's preamps are dope.

+1 for Sonora. Had a few songs mixed there. Nice API and outboard selection. Thay also have a Helios sidecar as well as a Pye. Tons of colors to choose. Haven't tracked in their room however.

If looking for a Lanois / Dylan record the Kingsize Neve 8068 is the probably best one..

Question Thanks everyone!!

Thanks everyone, the leads you've given me have actually helped a lot.
I would have loved to get into Sonora, but they are booked for the time we'd go in. Eggplant looks like a great vibey/creative studio with some killer front end, but we need a large format console to mix on.
Kingsize looks great, waiting for a call back.
Waiting for a call back on mad hatter.
The Boat has sailed, sorry...but they are booked. Eagle Rock studios looks great as well.
Has anyone worked at BOMB SHELTER STUDIOS, Los Angeles

You'd probably love mixing on the Neve at Mad Hatter. It sounds amazing and looks even more insane. The physical console has this elaborate, ornate wood-work. Brian is a great engineer and someone that won't piss you off after many hours! He's a good hang.

just be aware that at 'kingsize' the isolation is not good. unless they have fixed it. i was there and had to leave because bands on the back side of the tracking room and the also behind the control room wall could plainly be heard. that and there was a lot of noise and cross talk in the board/patch-bay, etc. sorry... but i wished i had known that before booking weeks. the gear is great though otherwise and the owners are nice guys, maybe that stuff is fixed.

Yeah, it's pretty funky in there, definitely not state-of-the-art Walter Storyk DG, but it does have a very cool vibe to compensate. Lots of standing waves in the CR, from what I remember, but the sweet spot is sweet. And the board developed some noises that had to be fixed before we could do the final mixdown. But they fixed it quickly, and comped us a day. :)

I gotta go say "hi" to the folks at Sonora. I'm glad that they are so busy! They must be responsible for all the hipster in the 'hood lately...

Saw this late or may have been able to throw my hand up as well. Not unslutty but not the Boat slutty :-)

I'd have to check with the other engineers bookings but we've been vacationing sporadically.

bounce inventive audio- home

I'm in Atwater Village, few blocks from Sonora and the Boat. Good luck!!

Thanks for the kind words about my room! Better updated site on myspace.com/eggplantstudios. Check out "Grandma's Warehouse" at Glendale and Temple. Was there tonight on a session. Nice room, Trident console, stacks of Neve, API and Daking strips, multitude of 1176's, LA3A's (and more) and a really fun mic cabinet.

Good luck!

The Bomb Shelter is in Downtown L.A. I haven't actually done a recording project there, but for a little while a huge jazz ensemble that I'm in was using their live room to practice.

I can tell you that it's a gigantic, beautiful place with a nice mic closet and plenty of great gear (both vintage and modern) and interesting instruments. The vibe is cool and comfortable. One of the guys from the Stone Temple Pilots owns the place. I would love to make a record there.

More Peace & Blessings,

+1 for Kingsize!

they have put some insulation between the tracking room and the adjacent studio (the ship... earlimart studio) so that isolation is much much better now.

however, it is true that the iso between the big room and all of the little iso booths (there are 4 booths plus a hallway plus a lounge!) isn't great, but it has never ruined a take for me.

i for one like to embrace the bleed between instruments. if you were to mute drums for the beginning of the song and use the tracking guitar, you'd probably hear the drums in the tracking guitar. but i always think stuff like that is cool. if you are working with someone super anal and devoid of vibe, they might prefer to work in a sterilized vacuum. depends on the situation/producer/band...

keep in mind you get what you pay for in a lot of situations, and i personally would take the beautiful console there, decent mic selection, tons of "iso" spaces, good people.... and very importantly, their amazing price.... i'd take all of that over perfect iso. no situation is perfect. in a world of get what you pay for, if all i have to sacrifice is iso between the booths of your own session, sign me up. when the iso was lame between that studio and the adjacent studio, i agree that was a bummer. but that is much much much better now.

Do you need an engineer as well? My place may be available. It was once called Soundcastle but is now called Pulse. Nice big room.

Nice. The producer I do all of my work with bought it a few years back. Great sounding room and I understand that it has some pretty good history.

I have Recorded at both The Bombshelter and Grandma's Warehouse, and liked them both. They both sound great, Bombshelter is way bigger but I loved the sound at Grandma's Warehouse, a little more of a retro vibe.
