What are you using as a frequency analyzer?

I like having a frequency analyzer available while recording/mixing. Especially when I'm in an unfamiliar room.
I used to have an older hardware analyzer. That's gone. Waves PAZ helps but for me it is not accurate enough. I've not tried Spectrafoo. I don't know if it even runs in OSX.
This looks interesting:http://www.troodontechnologies.com/

In addition to my ears is there a hardware analyzer that someone can suggest in the meantime?

Yeah! I have been looking for a good one too. There needs to be a better plugin analyzer for Pro Tools? What do the mastering guys use?

I found mine by doing a web-search... a guy who had bought a whack of gear from a radio station had one in very good shape, so I got a great deal on it (compared to the price of a new one - the DN6000 which replaced it)....

Fletcher also had one at one time that needed some servicing, but he was selling anyways - maybe check if he still has it?!

it's in beta on osx right now, and it's been stable for some time.

Any release date yet?

In the meantime this looks promising:

Don't know when this is being released either.

I will continue to look for the Klark Teknik as well.

I've heard good things about Wavelab. However, I am a Mac guy (please no Mac vs PC war) and I'd like to stay in Pro Tools while using it.
Thanks just the same.

Using the "on board" frequency analyzer in the Roland2480 DAW and the Behringer DEQ 2496 .

I've got Spectrafoo running on it's own (system9) computer with the stereo signal from the Sony DMX going to it always, or at least when I'm tracking/mixing.

I have noticed that I can mix without it, but I do miss it.

Great thing about Spectrafoo is you can change all the colors of the different meters, and lay them out as you want in "window sets".

I used to make everything stoner blue and purple, but I've broadened my color horizons since then.

Have Wavelab on the PC.. but never use it...as long as the clients are happy with the simple gear~ path results.

If you have either ears or program material that goes to 48k hz, that would be big news.

I'm especially interested in how you fit that bandwidth on a Red Book CD.

I find my Audio Precision analyzer will sweep an accurate frequency range from 10 hz to 200k hz with a 140 db dynamic range. A Tef 20 from Crown will also do a great job. The AP can use steady state sine waves rather than the random nature of pink noise that can vary quite a bit in levels over time.

I had a Klark Tech DN-60 and the levels were all over the place due to the pink noise source stimulus. I suspect some of the software frequency analyzers would do a better job.

I thought the wavelab one was pretty poor ....and the RME digicheck one as far better....

here's a link to me whinging about it (and the wavelab generated pink noise)

Thanks for that insightful response. I intentionally mentioned "besides my ears..." in the original post to avoid the above response but hey! he's entitled.

BTW are you the same Jim Williams that does the mods on pieces such as the 1176?

I'm running RME's Totalyser on a seperate notebook wich uses a digiface soundcard.
I works really well. The phase meter has been really useful during tracking...

Maybe, but wouldn't it be less expensive and less cumbersome to have either...
- software in the same platform so there'd be no need to purchase an additional computer
or
- a dedicated piece of hardware that requires little to no maintenance?

What would the pricing be for a PC, the software and the Digiface card?

Jamz,

i kinda meant it in jest...but.....

To keep the overhead low on my main DAW I use a seperate PC to master to (in wavelab) using an rme card.

The software is free with RME products and you wouldn't need a powerful pc to run it on if you were just using the spectrum analyser (ebay ?)

Seriously worth a thought (and wavelab is a fantastic bit of software too ! and it's pc only)

Orange...I completely understand.

Although I am a commited Mac guy I'm open minded enough (I think) to look at options. I've often considered a PC for the specific purpose of running Wavelab.
Thanks for the info.
Cheers!

another vote for spctrafoo, and even if you run it on a seprate MAC, it can be cheaper than a "proper" standalone RTA... at least one you can trust. Plus, you actually get some really useful tools, like a Phase Correlation Meter......

I just shot Metric Halo an email asking when Spectrafoo will be available in OSX. I know it's in beta right now.

You mentioned running it on a seperate Mac.
Do you ever use it within Pro Tools TDM?

I used it all the time on the Mix rig, a bit of a resource hog though, having it on a seperate box rocked.
