SOS...SOS....preamp...SOS please !!!!!!

Hi everybody !!!!

I'm about to spend my hard earned money...and I mean REALLY HARD EARNED money...on a piece of gear with the objective of improving the quality of my recordings.

Since I don't have the budget to buy something esoteric (from a store)...I'm gonna go with a KIT :\ !!!!

Now I'm gonna ask the pros out there...and people that already took a good listen to these preamps...between the Hamptone and the SCA N72 and J99 what should I choose ??????

I basicly do acoustic pop christian music....and am looking for something to smooth out my voice, which has the tendency to be a little too articulate...but I don't want something too warm...since being a baritone(even if I always sing on the top of my range) is already warm enough.

Is the J99 too clinical ???!!!!!

Is the N72 too warm and way too colored for a UH, Fake tenor ???!!!!!

Is the Hamptone(not the tube one) my best choice !!!!!????

Please help me out guys, I really need it!

Thanks,
Lincoln

You may want to mention which mic you are using....

Rode NTK? That's what I use, and boy, is it >bright<

You might get more, for less, auditioning different mics. When I want something that calms down the presence of the NTK, I reach for my Royer 121, turn it to the "bright" side (less dim, actually), and that usually does the trick.

I use the J99 with an NTK all the time. The J99 makes the NTK bigger, richer and airier. The NTK has a propensity towards sibilence, however, and though the J99 doesn't make it worse, it doesn't hide it either. The J99 is not clinical sounding to my ear. I'd call it rich, large, musical and beautiful.

The N72 is more of a flavored preamp, nice for drums and electric guitars you want to fatten (lo mids) and give a bit of edge (upper mids) to, but not my favorite on vocals, with the exception of some rock vocals or hardcore screamo vocals.

Bottom line is, every mic you put through the J99 will sound better than you've ever heard it before.

You can hear the J99 on the vocals, acoustic guitars and bass for these tracks:
