i can picture it cause i have seen it many times over. and its fun as hell... better than going to a club IMO, but the police breaking it up sucks bigtime.

its the police state that the US is moving towards that is causing all of this. between DUI's, noise ordinances, the ATF, the ALE, all the red tape and bullshit one has to wade through just to have a good time to see a show is ridiculous.

What?!?! If Green Day were playing in my neighbors house, I'd *want* the police to break it up.

...and I love Green Day. But da-HAM, i'd want some peace and quiet when I got home. I hear enough noise at work.

The neighborly love is to respect my neighbors privacy. I'd rather have Green Day do a block party and play outside so we could all enjoy it.

funnily enough i was having a guitar blast today with green days cd TODAY . the cd that starts off with the lady saying "billy joe" etc.
dont like a lot of the newer stuff as i measure it against purple and hendrix and the other icons. but green day do some interesting power bar chords etc. their hit on that cd i'm talking about a few tracks in i found quite interesting.... in that there is a space in the middle where they could have put a nice lead break.
but it wasnt there. so i add my own when the space occurs in the song. that cd is a lot of fun to play along with.peace.

probably since Oasis' 'Wonderwall' - which it's almost an exact copy of..

Someone on the radio here did a mashup of the two songs... it's pretty amusing.

hey, im down for that too.actually there is an ampitheater in my backyard, does like shakespeare in the park kinda shit. id love to book a free neighborhood/city rock show there.

i grew up when house parties were the norm... and i live in a section of town that has some college kids about, 2 live next door, another young single dude the next door down etc... and they have parties. it doesnt really bother me at all. i go to some of them, hell taken the whole family with kid and dog to one of them [evening party]

i will however concede that in my parts, even the kids.... its not rock and roll anymore [or even punk]... its bluegrass. so the porch becomes the bluegrass "stage" at times. there are a couple good parties on the holidays with like 5 bands all day, kegs, fireworks, horseshoes, moonshine ;)

did i get the main points right, dave?

Almost, Jon. Video games, the internet, and other things have taken a bunch of free time that would once have been spent playing music, or at least going out to hear music. In addition to that, people (at least, white collar employees) tend to work more hours in a week than they did 25 years ago (according to government reports).

For whatever reason, if people we're interested in attending, these places would still be open. I'm not aware that there's a shortage of live venues in LA, but I do know club owners there for the most part are interested in one thing. Can you sell drinks? The muscian's job primarily is to sell drinks. Their job is to give tickets to all their friends and hope they show up and buy drinks. Some Bands even promise free product just to get people to show up.
Gearchick, there is indeed a shortage (compared to 25 years ago) of live performance venues in LA. What you're missing, apparently, is that the whole 'pay to play' thing (giving out tickets, etc.) was not the standard until fairly recently.
Even in the comedy clubs, there would be bands. Dive bars would have musicians, country clubs, biker bars, fern bars. it was considered to be part of the atmosphere. And those bands were paid to be there. Sometimes not much, but they were paid.

And why was this important, especially considering that most of these were cover bands, not original music bands? Well, for several reasons; first, it gave musicians and singers a place where they could learn the craft (These days, you can have a record deal without ever setting foot on a stage). Second, it meant that there was a pool of experienced musicians available for artists to hire. Third, it (by a process of attrition) got rid of the worst of the musicians, which raises the average level of those who remained as performers. Fourth, by seeing what kinds of songs work (and the more observant would learn WHY they work), even those cover band gigs allowed songwriters to try out their own material (assuming that it was up to the quality of the covers) as well as finding out in the most pragmatic way possible IF their own songs are up to the level of the hits that theband played the rest of the night.

And I'd like to point out that 'house concerts' aren't even a little bit new - they were popular in the 17th Century, where the upper class would hire musicians inthe same way that they hired scullery maids. Remember that one of Beethoven's great complaints was that he was usually forced to use the servant's entrance....

Perhaps studios should try to help the live scene grow, take more part?

My World

In my town the trend is toward having lots of music in ill-equipped venues that are really bar/restaurants with small stages and little or no PA. The gig pays about $250, and there is no cover charge. Also, a lot of music is going down on weeknights instead of weekends. You don't have to pay to play, but it's a far cry from the days when a local act like ours could make close to $2,000 at the door. By the way, the last time we played "SoCal" we had no trouble getting four gigs in the area. We didn't pay to play, and we didn't get payed a whole lot, but coming from the East Coast we were pretty pleased.

Wow. That's really cool Jules. Do you feel this also gets your name out there among musicians who then would more likely use your studio because of your sponsorship of these concerts?

I know as a musician it would influence me more to use a studio that I actually felt gave something back like yours. What goes around, comes around. Imagine one of these big studios hosting concerts (house concert) in one of their big live rooms with their dead time. This would be suitable for loud bands as well. It seems like a waste that they don't do it.

Tree Sound Studio in Atlanta does this on a regular basis... http://www.treemm.com/index2.htm One band just did it... had 200 in attendance and made enough money to mix the project that they recorded live... pretty cool...

That's really cool. I can't imagine a more symbiotic relationship than a studio hosting a house concert series. They're set up to record, and the band has an excellent sounding venue. The studio would wind up taking half or all the door as a charge for mixing and recording this live show. It seems like something like this could save a big studio from going under, but I may be to optimistic about it.
