tracking acoustic gtr with 1176

I know this is one of those questions to which there is no right answer, but I'm curious what people have to say.

If you were going to use an 1176 in the recording chain, what settings would you start with for recording acoustic steelstring strumming? And what about fingerpicking? Style: rock.

The hypothetical guitarist would be mic'd with a u47--->micpre--->1176--->AD converters.

most of the time I start with 8:1 or 12:1 ratio, slow attack and fast release, input around 11 o'clock, and output around 1 o'clock and work from there. You may end up somewhere else entirely but it's a good starting point.

i've also been a fan of 12:1 with a slightly slower attack than release. same setting for vox. very smooth.

Hypothetically... I'd listen to the track, and do whatever fit in best with the other sounds... I know I have no rule of thumb nor starting point other than diddling the knobs until the track feels right in context... but that's just me.

Are you trying to even it out or smash it for effect? I'd probably start around 4:1 or 8:1 and try slower attack times. Though...sometimes bypass is best. Tranny saturation can be a beautiful thing.

Like others, I love the sound of a 1176 @ 12:1 with pretty slow attack, and fast release (80-100% to clockwise). I usually don't set it for much gain reduction though, just a few dB. Be careful of compressing the signal too much, especially if you are using the 1176 for tracking instead of mixing.
