Drum Sounds

Say you had a standard drum kit... kick, snare, three toms, ride, crash, and hi hats... if you could only use 8 mic pres and 8 mics, what would they be?

I've been diggin my tg preamps on drums lately...

1. Kick --> Audix D6 --> TG-2
2. Snare top --> SM57 --> TG-2
3. Snare bottom --> SM57 --> TG-2
4. Rack tom 1 --> SM57 --> Art MPA
5. Rack tom 2 --> SM57 --> Art MPA
6. Floor tom --> Seinnheiser 421 --> TG2
7. Over head L --> TLM103 --> GR MP-2NV
8. Over head R --> TLM103 --> GR MP-2NV

feel feel to post what eq's and commpressors you like to use as well...

depends on exact style and drummer, butt....

1. Kick -->Senn e602--> API 3124
2. Snare top --> beta57 OR sm-57--> Manley SLAM
3. Snare bottom --> e609 --> MP-2NV
4. Rack tom 1 --> Senn e604 --> MP-2NV
5. Rack tom 2 --> Senn e604 --> API 3124
6. Floor tom --> Sennheiser 421 --> Manley SLAM
7. OH L --> Rode K2 OR AT 4047--> SSL 4000G
8. OH R --> Rode K2 OR AT 4047--> SSL 4000G

...If it was heavier music i would also (slightly) clip all the API pres, use the FET limiter on the SLAM channels, and hit the Great Rivers pretty hard. Loving parallel coompression on the OH these days...almost any decent compressor works....

Here's my current drum miking set-up:

Top snare>sm57-OSA-MP1A
Bot snare>sm84-OSA-MP1A
Middle Overhead>Soundeluxe U195>BAE 312A
Far Right Overhead>AKG 414-BULS>BAE 312A
Kick>ATM25>OSA-MP1L3
Mono Room>Soundelux E47>OSA-MP1L3

all tracks to RADAR.

with the Soundelux U195 in "fat" mode i get enough toms to not have to close them.

Here's mine:

3) Snare Bottom - AKG 451-Focusrite Red 4
4) Rack Tom - 421 - Focusrite Red 4
5) Floor Tom - 421 - Focusrite Red 4
6) Hat - KM 84 - Focusrite Red 4
7) Oh Side - U87 - V72
8) Oh Top - U87 - V72

Than if I have room to do so:
9) Ride - KM 84

12) Mono Room - Royer 121

I would lose the snare bottom in favour for a room mic of front of kick / subkick mic.

Good luck,
Dirk

BD- SM-7 or RE20
Snare - KM-84
Over the high toms - Gefell UM70 or U-87
At side of Low toms - Gefell UM70 or U-87
In front of Kit looking in at at from 6-15 feet away - 2 STC/Coles 4038s

I would use all the same discrete mic pres.. either API, Daking or Neve.

That's 6 mics.
If something is missing or needs help i'd use one of the other two channles for that.
If not, not.

Interesting... Do you spend alot of time positioning the 2 front-of-kit mics every time, or do you have a general starting position ?

I assume these two mics play a major part in the sound ?

Cheers,

Nathan

Always changing but my actual session uses:

Kick in: AT Pro9 - Pendulum Quartet
Kick out: Royer 121 - Desk
Snare top: SM57 - Daking
Snare bottom: Sm 57 - Desk
Overheads: Beyer M160 - Buzz MA2.2
Toms: 421 - Desk
Floor Tom: Re20 - Desk
Room (M/S): U87/AT4050 - Desk
Hat: KM 184 - Desk

Drummer insisted on the Snare bottom mic - and I like it after a very long time hating every snare bottom mic
I think I won't use much of the kick out mic on this project - but you never know
I love the Buzz on the overheads - really SCHWEEEEEEEEEEEEEET

so for this Session for this drummer ....

Recent Rock/Blues/pop band.

Pearl Export Kit

Sennheiser 602 Kick (don't need 5K with this mic)
U87 Snare (Ludwig Black Beauty, What a great sounding drum)
Sennheiser 604's on the toms
84i's on the hats and OHS
All into API's
Sounded great...mind u, the room was great also...the kit was reskinned and tuned by a real pro...every session I do I bring in a guy 2 "tune the kit"...makes it a lot easier

Kick --> D-112 or 421 --> UA 2108 --> dbx 160VU
Snare --> Beyer M201 --> UA 2108 --> dbx 160VU (sometimes)
OHs --> KM 184s in 'Recorderman' --> TG-2
FOK /Room --> C-414 B-ULS --> 6176 in 8:1 or 'British'
Toms --> Telefunken 421s --> ART MPAs

I recently got a pair of Beyer M160s, I actually prefer the KM 184s for OHs in my room. Have only tried them in 'Recorderman' so far, there were actually NOT ENOUGH cymbals captured if you can believe such a thing. I'll try it in another setting for sure....the M160s are great for guitar cabs and percussion though!

I start with the 4038's about 6 feet in front and slightly wider than the kit, looking in at the snare from about 5' high.
but i adjust based on the room and the desired result.

In the set-up I described, I can use the 2 87's/um70's as the 'main part' of the sound and position the 4038s as rooms/cymbals... or I can use the 4038's as the main sound and use the closer 87's as tom mics or not at all if not needed.

My room sucks.

1. Kick - 421, D112, or Altec M11 'Coke Bottle' -> DIY-1073 -> heavily modified 3630 (new guts similar to the newer dbx 160)
2. Snare - C451B, -20dB pad -> DIY-LT1115 preamp (Sowter iron)-> EL8
** alternate mics I like here inclulde:
C60 + CK61
Altec M11
Beta 57
SM57
I mix and match on snare till I get a sound I like.
3 .OHL - C451B, -20dB pad -> DIY-SSM preamp
4. OHR - C451B, -20dB pad -> DIY-SSM preamp
** Alternate mics I like here are the AT4033, or the MC012's if I don't need them for toms.
5. Tom 1 - MC012 -> DIY-1073
6. Tom 2 - MC012 -> DIY-1073
** If I've used the MC012's up by now, then I'll use some modified AT Pro37R's here.
7. Tom 3 - SM57 -> DIY-RCA-BA31
** If I have the 421 because I didn't use it on kick, I'll use it here.
One of:
8a. Hat - C451B, -20dB pad -> DIY-SSM preamp
8b. Room - Altec M11, AT4050, AT4033, or whatever seems right and whatever's left over.
8c. Snare bottom - TLM103 or something else.... see above.

Overheads I roll off during mixdown, and same with the snare. The C451B is really too bright for both of these locations but it's a clean bright. I find I would rather roll off something during the mix then try to add it with EQ later if it turns out something's too dark.

I pull out the circuitry in there (and the crappy transformer), replacing it with a single-transistor amplifier (I think it's a BC560C transistor that I put in there). It's on my list of things to put in a PDF file and post. It cleans up the low frequencies quite a bit.

Hey Josh,

What else have you tried your e22s and R-84 on kit wise? I really like SD condensers on snare and toms, and ribbons on FOK and outside kick. Haven't tried these out by any chance, have you?

Cheers,

bdp

i'm finding the e22s more and more to be quite utilitarian. i really like it on toms, snare and overheads. it also shines on electric guitar cabs and acoustic guitar.... quite useful. as far as the r-84, on drums it pretty much stays in the FOK spot. electric guitar cabs are a favorite application for the r-84 as well for me.
