| It all depends on what you are using them for. For tracking I have found its different for each person, some like these ones, some like those ones. Some even prefer behringer over a high end AKG or grado believe it or not. To each their own - the key is to try a bunch of them before you make a decision. For mixing (if I have to use cans) I generally go to the trusty akg k701s - they are the closest I can get to my sm8s without breaking the bank on a piece of gear I rarely use. Denon or grado for tracking certain parts if the click has to be so loud it bleeds from the 701s. |

| I don't really have a "top 3" as such, I rather have preferred ones for different applications... For general monitoring purposes: Sennheiser HD280 Pro. I have made some quite good mixes on these in tight spots. Also, it says "Pro" in the name, so they're pro! I prefer these over AKG, Beyer and Sony. Comfortable. For drummer headphones (I'm also a drummer): Direct Sound Extreme Isolation EX-29. Hands down the best (more like: the ONLY properly working) phones for drumming. And I've tried a LOT! Drums sound really nice acoustically, and are very well attenuated. Playing as hard and loud as I possibly can and still the click can be set ridiculously low. Nothing I hate more than a really loud click - bleeds (leaks into overheads and feels like my ears are bleeding). Plus they sound quite nice - non-hyped. Also pretty comfortable - I have played musical shows with these on for hours in a row without problems. |

| AKG K701 AKG K601 Hmm, I guess I haven't heard any other headphones I'd like. But I'm excited to hear Beyerdynamics DTxx0 -series (probably not 770, because it's said to be bass-heavy). Also the high-end Sony's are said to be completely different with proper amplification, which I didn't have. Otherwise the sound seems to be coming from a tin can. |

| 1. ATH-M50 2. ATH-M50 3. ATH-M50 I am really picky about headphones. These have exceeded my expectations. You cannot go wrong with them. I've had the Sennheiser HD 600's, Sony's, Grados and AKG's - the ATH's are amazing. |

| 1- Sony 7506's because I understand them and I've used them "most" 2- Beyer DT770 because they legitimately sound great for headphones and won't give you much headphone bleed 3- MoreMe's because they're cheap, replaceable, and don't sound that horrible

| I'll be damned if my very eardrums haven't grown into having same sonic characteristics as K240 by now AKG did a series called K240DF a while ago, kindof a 240 highdef model, and those were friggin awesome. But K240 and it's relatives are closed back, and open back headphones provides a huge advange for accurate listening (and major disadvantage for tracking). For AKG I guess the 701s are the big thing right now, and I've tried the Sennheiser 650 and they are real spectacular. |

| I have the BD DT-990's and love them other than the curly cord. So... 1. Fostex T40RP 2. Beyerdynamic DT-990 or 770 3. AKG Gold

| OK here's my price-is-no-object, absolute desirability ranking of the headphones I myself own: 1. Denon AH-D2000 2. ATH-M50 3. HD600 4. Beyer DT770 Pro 80Ohm 5. Ultrasone Proline 750 6. K701 7. HD280 8. HD535 9. K270 10. MDR-7506 11. Fostex T20 Yup the Denons take the prize, best cans I've ever had. K701 was a bitter disappointment for me, uncomfortable, shrill, and bass-shy. I like comfort, smooth tops, and full lows. Isolation is a plus for tracking, for which the ATH-M50 might be a good all-around but for the sweat factor that the Beyers and Ultrasones solved. |

Indeed very interesting cans. In my book, AKG 271Studio are fine, too, but not better than Denons. I don't like Sonys and somehow cooled down for Ultrasone. Grado sounds fine for home listening, but didn't work for me in studio. Sennheiser HD600 is classic (excellent) choice (better than HD 650 to my ears) Top 3: AKG K1000 (with expensive amp + cable to get max out of them, minus - costly solution+totaly open) Beyerdynamic DT880 Pro (250 Ohm) Denon AHD5000 Usually I use at least 3-5 cans in various phases of tracking, mixing, listening. Cans are absolutely INEVITABLE part of monitoring, equal to monitors, so proper chain is important, too. | |

| I am a cello player and am not a typical subscriber to gearslutz. However, I have friends who are. I began using Ultrasone headphones because of the company I met in the US at NAMM, Becca, Steffenee and Cathy. They have launched this headphone against all odds in the United States, and indeed in the world. It is a good headphone, but more, it had great service, great people, and a very exciting vibe. Having spoken to them numerous times, I know that what they do is for the love of music. They receive no financial or marketing help from the manufacturer. Their home office, from all that I can ascertain, has broken contracts and taken over distribution in the United States, hoping to profit off of their success thus far. They have also tried to hurt the names of these fine people. I have a pair that needs serviced. I have emailed this manufacturer and US company several times and have received no response. Sweetwater and Sam Ash have dropped the line because of the clear lack of concern from the manufacturer. I would hope that the music community would rise up and let Guitar Center and the rest of the music community know that we need to support the people that support us. We do not want to do business with people who try to profit off of our talent. Heaphones come and go. Patents come and go. Let Ultrasone go. There will be another headphone, just as good or better. The Ultrasone office has gone their separate ways. However, you can still voice your support at info@ultrasoneusa.com. I'm sure they would love to hear from you. Regards, Karel |

| I like AKG K141S when bleed isn't an issue and you want a nice semi-open sound. I think the Sennheiser HD650 are incredible, closest thing to strapping two high quality monitors to your skull. Equation Audio EP-3070 are amazing inexpensive headphones, and even have a detachable cable and padded headband. You actually have good bass response and volume, and quite good isolation to boot. I gotta say though, for straight up isolation I really enjoy my 2 pairs of Extreme Isolation Headphones! Great for drums and live / remote tracking. War

| +1 on the HD280s. Probably just because I've used them the most, but I think they are kinda like NS10's...they don't kiss the ass of what's being played through them, and I like that.
