Thread Starter | Stereo mics for Piano
Hi everyone, It has been some time (5 years) since I have had the chance to record the grand piano in my folks house! Unfortunatly, I do not have great mics or pres for this job, but here is what I will be useing: Studio Projects B1 mics (2) RNP Masterlink (unmoded as of yet) My qestion is for the mic placement and distance. I know that this can be subjective, however, I am looking for an overall even piano sound, nothing fancy (standard, if that makes more sence.) Not that I would tell the folks this, but I will be plucking the strings as well, so I would imagine that too close would not be ideal. I am extremly excited about recording the piano, as it has been five long years since I have played a real one, tracked and brought back to the studio (now with RADAR!) Thank you in advance!

That should go well. The B1 is a 3 micron design with good top detail and no mud, and the RNP is just fine. Set them up and see, it's all anyone could suggest ...

Put em in X-Y and move em around. Don't crowd the piano, let it breathe. It depends so much on the room and how well the piano projects the sound. Wood floors would be cool. Chris |

Thank you both! Got the hard wood oak floors and 15 foot ceiling! The X - Y idea is great, I shall try that!
