High Pass Filter ?

Hellas,

I'm looking for a portable standalone outboard Highpass-Filter (and maybe Lowpass), something like the API 215 L, but in a smaller price league. Any suggestions ?
Did anyone compare analog Highpass Filters with Digital ones ?

Thanks and cheerios, kosi

Hi kosi,

Some of the warmest shelving eq's I've heard are the vintage Telfunkens!! Great bell curve, Punchy clear & round bass,
not boxy or muddy. I use these for any instrument tracking, mixing and MASTERING. Beautiful top and fat bottom

I picked these ones up for a bomb on Ebay.

W695
Pair of Telefunken W695 EQ's.
Frequencies are as follows:
Low - 60hz +/- 15 dB boost/cut,
High - 10kHz +/- 15 dB boost/cut,
Mid 0.7,1, 1.4, 2,3,(4)
(w695a 5.6) kHz , 8dB boost.

ELA E150
Pair of Telefunken ELA E150 EQ's.
Frequencies are as follows:
Low - 60hz +/- 15 dB boost/cut,
High - 10kHz +/- 15 dB boost/cut,

Plug in & play!!

I also believe the low/high shelving eq's of the Langevin DVC is a winner!!

thanks Wane, but I'm looking for a different animal.
I want to have a few adjustable frequencies, and all your little Teles are only 60 Hz.
By the way, I own also a pair of W695, which I love for their bass, but the 10k treble make my ears cry.
Most of the time, I use them as sidechain eqs for compressors.

I need a filter for these things: Turn up lets say100 Hz and cut it at 90, this gives me a little bump right at the corner of the lowpass and with finetuning, you get the sweet spot on a kick or whatever. nice thing.rollz
and for many things more....

greetings, kosi

As for the high-pass / low-pass thing these NTP-filters might do the job.

I often use them to shape the sound of an ambience track or the return from a reverb.

NTP 182-200
I don't know anything about the availability of these filters though...

yeah, looks very fine! I'll do some research, or do you want to sell yours ?
Anyway. I like the NTP stuff alot.
How are the 182/120 ? I have a pair of 182/150, which sound very nice, but one is always "kaputt"

Urei 555

I had a racked pair of Urei 555s that were great; I'd recommend 'em. -E

I revived this thread from the dead to see if there are some other favorites out there in 2009. What's your go-to outboard HPF?

Siemens W293 & W294. Waiting for mine to get racked. Funny how packed these modules are. It's a single HP or LP, no?

Isn't there any new outboard sweepable low pass filter out there?

I know API makes one for the 200 "serie" but that would cost 1200$ to get the rack and module, it's way too much for a low pass filter imo.

I have no idea why standalone high pass filters don't really exist (the Siemens W293 does have me intrigued...).

I would be all over a relatively cheap 4 or 8 channel HPF unit. I don't generally EQ while tracking, but high pass is often pretty easy to commit to!

I do not understand the point of an external filter when an ITB does the job just fine.

I mean if you have a board that has one available, I would think it would sound good as well and do the job too.

However I suppose that perhaps these hardware ones might offer some different characteristics, which is why you are asking about one?

I can't comment much as this question baffles me slightly. lol

Most of the time, "just fine" just isn't good enough. ; ) The Dangerous eq's incorporate an analog baxandell filter, which is hard to find in a plug.

Doesn't widening the Q as much as it can go and moving it to the furthest end and lowering the gain achieve the same effect?

I mean you can achieve the same with replacing the use of a high shelf by doing the same thing, can you not?

I see your point on it being analog though which I'm sure is more advantageous sonically.

I don't work itb and my board doesn't have a low pass filter, I'm sure I'm not alone in that situation, what is hard to understand?

No it's not the same, not as drastic and an extra band on the eq isn't always available for that kind of task.

Looks promising, probably pretty high end with a high en d price though, I bet it'll be worth it but I'd really like to see a 2 or 4 channel of sweepable low pass, or at least with selectable frequencies.

I got a pair of the Shiny Box Guillotine's in 500 format. They are very nice HP/LP filters and very easily recallable. Perfect for tracking. You should demo them. thumbsup

Everything you guys mentionned looks very nice but they either require a chassis or are extremely expensive.
I already have some great eq in my console so right now I don't want to spend too much for an external eq only for it's low pass.

The only low pass filter that I found that doesn't cost an arm is the drawmer DS201 which is a gate that has a low pass in it....

I'm looking for a cheap or reasonably-priced detented hpf to use on the sidechain inputs of my smart c2. The Dangerous Bax is overkill for this application although I do like the freq selection it offers.

I am not skilled at diy. The ds201 could work except it's not detented.
