| Budget Overhead Questions - inc. SP C4, ADK Hamburg I realized how hyped and harsh my Rode NT1000 is, and realized I needed a new vocal mic, and also needed to pick up a pair of drum overhead mics. I am on a very limited budget, and after doing some research, I thought I may be able to kill two birds with one stone with some ADKs, but now I am not so sure. I am looking at a couple options: ADK Hamburg matched stereo pair ADK Hamburg + Studio Projects C4 matched pair I am leaning towards the Hamburg because of it being designed to have a smooth top end and a more vintage flavor. I really need to get away from the Rode hyped and harsh sound with vocals. Now, I have heard from a few people that budget LD condensers do a much better job on OHs than budget SDs, so I am torn between the options. I could use the C4s omni capsules to record my Taylor in a great room I have access to, but I am concerned that they may not perform as favorably as the Hamburgs on picking up the whole frequency range of the whole kit well (especially in a kick, snare, stereo overhead setup, since ) as OHs. Now, some people have me thinking I could make a decent improvement by moving up to an AT4047 or an ADK 51 TC, but if I did that, I would have to use SM57s as overheads for a while longer. Anyways, I am confused and tired of thinking about my vocal mic and OH mic dilemma, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

| The C4's are good budget overhead mics. A pair of CAD M179's would do you nicely as well. War

| Thanks for the info. I have never heard anything but good about the C4s, so I hope those will be a good choice for overhead, acoustic, and ambient recording work. Does anyone have any more info on the ADK Hamburg? |

| Lives for gear | I agree about the cheap LD vs. cheap SD. I tried once my MXL V67 x MXL 603s x AT 3525 and the V67 sounded better on overheads... the thing is, I only have one IŽm about to get another one to useŽem as overheads. |

| I think the C4s sound great as overheads. The omni caps are much bassier and smoother than the cardioid caps, which gives you some tonal options. They are decent on acoustic guitar, much more natural than the 603s, another popular budget mic. |

| A stereo matched pair of Oktava MK012's are great for a budget. I know some high end guys who like to use them for drum overheads.

| Moderator | I was using Oktava's until lately one of them starting not working very reliably (i hope i can get it fixed somehow) so the other day I put up my ADK Vienna edition mics and I feel it was a big improvement. It much closer to the sound I was looking for and I had to use EQ much less than with the Oktava's. I felt the Oktava's always needed some lifting above 10K to give me the crisp cymbals i was looking for. They didn't come with a graph so I have no clue what their eq curve is supposed to look like, but there was always a falloff after 10K when i recorded anything with them. The ADKs, on the other hand, are going to be my go-to overhead mics for a while until I find a need for a change. I'm definitely excited to hear the Hamburg editions though in the near future. |
