It was as I understand it, tracked in Bearsville Studios

the comments about it not being a great record is actually funny - er, Jeff Buckley is a legend... laugh out loud at some of these comments

producers take note - the band is chuffed on this record - they want to "GO FOR IT" based on the inspiration of this record. Discounting the band's wishes because 'you know better' is ridiculous.

Andy Wallace tracked and mixed it. He's very old school and of course utterly cutting edge. He knows things and it's best just to hire him.

I have to tell you that the drummer and musicians on that record are exceptional. See bonus material on "Jeff Buckley Live in Chicago" DVD for some naked recording. Amazing band.

The Jeff gig was that he was very influenced by the 'downtown scene' in New York - which translates as 'creating a personal musical event live on stage' In London, there is the 'pub event' where an incredible concert takes place, but it's often not intimate as it can get in these venues like the old Knitting Factory, The Living Room, Sine. Those musicians were part of that scene.

The drummer has gone on to make many, many excellent records working with Rufus Wainwright III, John Meyer, Duncan Sheik. And, Sir Elton John complimented his playing when they met up ON STAGE for a Rufus gig in L.A.

The last New York artist like this was Suzanne Vega. Just incredible artist.

Jeff of course is as important as Kurt Cobain and we're kicking ourselves for 'not getting it' when he was alive. His influence on the London scene right now in particular is utterly obscene. (a compliement)

it's like the first time listening to The Pixies or Bob Dylan.

Anyways - the funny thing is that some of their touring equipment was in fact new gear.

The quick answer which is a true answer, hire those people that made that record. You'ld be surprised who bands hire to 'get' sounds.

I'm aware of the story behind "Sketches..." but I still stand by it as a tremendous work, flawed and slightly-out-of-focus as it is. I think it suggests that Jeff was evolving and going to continue to make exciting music. "Witches' Rave" is such a great song, so much wit and agility, such an excellent melody, an entire dreamworld in just a few minutes.

I have all of Jeff Buckley's records, posthumous and otherwise, and I think "Sketches..." is great. Apparently, I'm in a minority. That's okay. I'm SO glad it was released!

The mention of Scott Litt, brings up another album that is kinda in the same arena sonically and thats 'Automatic for the people' by REM. I think in both cases these albums, 'Grace' and 'Automatic......' really nailed the songs 100% in terms of production aesthetics to really give the music a degree of emotion, tangibility and inspiration that directly relates to the song. While i still think of Grace as production prefection in nearly every aspectm; Automatic comes a VERY close second for me.

Both inspiring and totally differnt albums.
