What do you read?

What do you guys read? I'm going on vacation and need a fresh doze of audio literature.

I've already been through "Behind the glass" (Howard Massey), "Modern recording techniques", "Mastering audio" (Bob Katz) and something stupid by Bobby Owensky.

Behind the glass was the only one really interesting.

Recommend me something please

"Wouldn't It Be Nice" is great fun; he's not a fantastic writer but adequate, and he's still gobs better at writing than i'll ever be. ). "All You Need Is Ears" is fun too. Both are pretty dated, but if you dig stories of the days of yore, check "Temples of Sound".

"The Amp Book" is a cool book if you are electronically handy.

Focal Press's "Recording Studio Design" IS TO DIE FOR. Reads like a text book and that fine with me, becuase that's what flips my wig.

My Recordings/Credits

'Make mine music' is awesome - only in hardback at the moment I think but worth every penny IMHO

Confessions of a Record Producer

Great book. More business than artistic but very very good. It helps keep your eye's open to the reality of the music industry.

P.S. Have a great holiday!

Umm, if you're going on vacation, why not read something that isn't audio related? Perhaps something that relates to the place where you're vacationing?

Yeah. read Flashman, by George Macdonald Frasier. It's funny as hell and I could not put it down. If you like it, there are about 15 more in the series..

How funny is this? I am reading skinny legs at the moment, after I have been crazed by jitterbug. But, for me, the BURNER is "fierce invalids home from hot climates". that book kind of changed my point of views! i even started working on music influenced by this book...

for audio: i have something called handbook of studiotechnics. all the basics in there: acoustics, electronics and so on. very"dry" but helpful...

hey, but again, another vote for TOM ROBBINS

This book on Joe Meek is quite a good read, a little detail-shy but entertaining with plenty of pics.

'White noise' by Don DeLillo, not audio-related but great writing. Just read his 'Cosmopolis', not half as good.
As for audio: 'Temples of sound' is a great read and a even better sight, the pics are amazing and inspiring.

Take a complete vacation from audio, that's my 0.2..

I recommend Bulgakov's "Master and Margarita".

that was a killer book as well. one of his more "novels" rather than philosophical rants. another one was 'half asleep in frogs pajamas' that i really liked and really impacted my outlook on "work" and humans very bizarre adoration with money.

i think after i finish ARA [im at the part where the corpse of jesus shows up], i will be fully caught up with everything he has written...

and still like with woodpecker is pretty good now that i think of it.... epsecially if you like redheads.

These days, mostly microphone patents (Altec, Neumann, AKG - AKG's are particularly descriptive). Sometimes the Digikey catalog, and sometimes Mix or Sound on Sound.

Another Tom Robbins book worth noting is "F**k Yes" under his alter ego DR. Wing F. Fing. Totally hilarious.
There is also the book by Brian Eno which I can not remember the title of, "vertical wall of sound" or something like that. You could always buy a heap of old tapeop back issues.

Of course, we're making all these suggestions, but - what are you looking for in your reading experience? Something substantial or simply literary bon bons - something to pass the time?
The mysteries by Robert Parker fit into the 'bon bon' category - light reading that entertains and amuses. I also like John Dunning's "Bookman" Mysteries, as well as Jonathan Gash's "Lovejoy" series for that sort of thing.

Jared's "Guns, Germs and Steel" is indeed an interesting read, though it's not really heavy slogging. If you're into substantial reading - the kind that keeps you awake with more questions, you could (depending on your interests) go for Joseph Campbell's "Thousand Faces Of God" or Hoftadler's "Goedel Escher Bach".

There are tens of thousands of great books out there - I'm bummed that I don't have time to read them all....

I'm intrigued my the "mixing with your mind" book. I couldn't find it at Amazon, guess I need to order it directly from the site in Australia? Sounds interesting.
