Thread Starter | Snare Sample Recommendations? I'm looking for killer snare samples, in a pop-rock vein with an acoustic sound (non-electronic). I'm looking for .aif or .wav files (not a package like BFD). Any recommendations? |

| I don't know if this is a common practice or if helpful to what your asking, but a few years back someone gave me a DAT full of sampled snare hits. When I asked where all the samples came from. I was told from popular songs people listen to everyday. Before then I never thought of taking that approach. Since then from time to time I would listen through current and past songs for snare hits to use. If you feel guilty about the whole process. You can do as I do and just have another snare hit mixed underneath the sampled snare hit or vice versa. ![]() Sorry it wasn't exactly what you were looking for, but the snare your ear wants to hear might be on an album you may own. I hope what I typed made any sense if any. |

| I think the original DFH still sounds pretty good, and I am pretty sure it was just the samples, not the package. It pales with BFD, IMO, but that's not what you're looking for. Tunes. |

| And as for the previous post... I think it was e-cue who said to go get sample kick and snare from No Doubt's hella good. If I am wrong... sorry cue. It's a grey area for me. I think it's pretty lame to copyright a snare hit, but at the same time there's a percieved impurity to it. A thievery of sorts. On the flipside, just because we buy a sample CD we lull ourselves into believing that we are somehow more creative when all we're really doing is using and manipulating the work of others. If you take it to it's logical end, you would have to geel guilty about everything that you, yourself, didn't create. Console, guitar, mic, preamp, snare, samples, presets, reverb... I could go on and on. We build our work on the work of others, just as those others based their work on those who had gone before. Tunes. |

| There are some free acoustic acoustic snare hits to download at my website - http://www.naturalstudio.co.uk - just look for ns_kit7free. Available as wav files. Cheers, Douglas. |

| I can also highly recommend the NaturalSound NSKit. It is simply amazing for a free sample set.

| I take the approach of "borrowing" hits from commercial cds. I have a library of about 200 kicks/snares from cd's. I don't really have a problem doing it, because as mentioned below we "borrow" alot of things in recording. A good starter example is Ants Marchin by dave mathews band.....4 solid snare hits at the beginning of the song soloed out!!! If you choose to do this, go through your cd collection, you'd be amazed how many cd's have a stray kick or snare or even toms completely soloed out for that split second you need to cut it up. |

Thread Starter | Hey, thanks for the recommendations. While I appreciate the posts, they're pretty identical to those on a previous thread in this forum. I followed the same links from the previous thread, and the notion of sampling snares from records is a pretty standard if not old concept. I was hoping for a recommendation for an existing extensive or particularly dialed-in collection of such samples. Judging from the response to this post, I guess these are closely guarded possessions. Otherwise, I'd be willing to open up a server where people can drop off and pick up these types of samples. |

| You may also want to check out the Bob Clearmountain drum sample CD's. Lots of very well recorded acoustic drums. He also recorded multiple setups to help you get what you need. Example: #1: DW 22in. kick, felt beater, 421 in/47 out #2: DW 22in. kick, felt beater, D12 in/47 out Then you'd find the same drum and micing, but using a wood beater, etc. |

But if you were to indulge, just drop the pitch a whole step and no one will be the wiser.Drumkit From Hell, I've used quite a bit. They're a little heavy-handed for some songs, but with some editing and mixing chops you can do a lot with them. Future Music magazine often has some very usable drum sample CDs included. Drumdrops is mos def worth checking out. I often find myself dipping into the Kontakt sample library for drum samples, which is nice, because I found the software itself to be mostly useless, so at least I got SOME value from it. There's another forum with some very usable samples posted for download, which I've used. In fact I believe e-cue even posted some of them himself (thanks Dylan!). Quote:
Another observation: I've found getting good samples is only half the battle. The other half, is utilizing editing and mixing Kung Fu on the "virtual kit" in getting it to sound "realistic," or at least enough so to fool the average listener into not noticing/caring/giving a flying fook that it's "virtual." That's an entirely new thread.

| I have a small website, which links to e-bay for sales: www.musicians-samples.com They're cheap. You can listen to examples to see if you like the snare sound. Also, I would recommend checking out any of the session series drums from Sonic Implants. IMHO, these are the best "sounding" acoustic drum sample I've come accross. The only problem is that, at most, there is only 4 velocity layers per kit piece. I use the kick sample in a lot of the rock/pop recordings I do. NS Kit is very cool, and free as others have mentioned. |

however, lowly trolls like me have to start somewhere, especially with no room for a drum kit in my apartment nor the money for studio time just to build up my own samples collection, so i reach for sonic implants or dfh.
