Thread Starter | Couple quick Console questions!
I'm in the midst of instaliing a D&R Dayner in my studio and just wanted to ask a couple quick questions. My Tape returns are unbalanced and i don't think i'll be using my Line inputs at all. Is it O.K to use my balanced Inputs to feed my console my DAW outputs. Also How much of a difference is it using unbalanced cables? As the direct outputs from the channels are unbalanced as well as the Monitor outputs. They will only run about 2 metres to the converters???? Also the Control room monitor out and the Alternative monitor out are both Stereo 1/4inch jack to feed power amps. I'm feeding them both into powered monitors. how should i wire the jack? tip to the left speaker and ring to the right and ignore the sleeve ground????? Cheers |

With a 2 meter short run unbalanced might not be an issue. Personally I would experiment. Get maybe 8 of each channels of the proper cables and experiment with the sound (get 2 balanced 8 channel snakes and you can always go balanced or unbalanced if the cable itself is balanced). Most likely the balanced channel inputs are going to be going through more circuitry, and the unbalanced might sound bigger. Or you might find you need the balanced circuitry in your environment for noise issues. It's a pretty important decision that if I was in your position experimentation would be a key factor. Does the console have a patch bay? If not I would get a couple bays hooked up for integrating outboard gear. Just go out of your D/A's into the bay, then at a minimum normal out to the inputs of the console (again, balanced or unbalanced depending on what you find based on the suggestions above).

unbalanced cables, on low impedence circuits, are fine just don't run them over power supplies etc as they are succeptable to picking up interference. If the impedence is low they can run dozens of meters with good cableing and proper routing.

Sweet I think i''l try 8 channels in the balanced lines, and 8 in the unbalanced tape returns and see if i can hear a difference.

Just installed my own Dayner! What a great sounding, and versatile board!!! I tried the pres out today for the first time, silent, and very nice sounding. Clean but still with a little something extra. All of the ins/outs have this -10. +4 thing going on. You might know this already but in case you don't, all the ins/outs, except for the mains, are tip =-10, ring =+4. And on the CRM, and 2 track ABC: Tip=right, ring= left I have my DAW going into the line ins on two "extra" channels. As for monitoring, I have a cable that splits the tip and ring into two 1/4 in, and they feed my amp's l/r which feeds my speakers. There's been no ground issue, as far as sound is concerned, from the CRM to my speakers. Anyway, don't know if any of that helps, but I have the schematics, and the manual if you need. Also, the resident expert on D&R boards is a man by the name of Paul Westbrook. I believe he is in Texas, I have yet to be in touch with him, pm me if you want, or can't find his specifics. Be well, DP
