guitar amps

So, I am sure that you don't always "pick" the amp, but what ones do you find keep being returned to? I know that Petty has a taste for those "little" fenders....

Also, On that thing about using a pzm on the backside... which way is the PZM element pointing when you do it?

Any "go to" bass setups?

Richard, we have the same taste in guitar amps!

I own a Vox AC15TBX (it's the one with the blue alnico speaker). The other two amps I love are the 1959 Fender Deluxe Tweed (is there a reissue or amp that comes close to this? I don't think I could afford an original one).

Other than that, all I'd need is a Mesa Boogie dual or triple rectifier and that pretty much covers everything.

1. Vox for cleans
2. Fender Tweed for overdriven and vintage distortion
3. Mesa Boogie for modern sounds

I also DI my basses (P Bass/Hofner/Musicman Stingray into Neve 1073 into Urei 1176 soon to be LA2A when it arrives).

The amp in the case of silvertone gtr is a big fav of mine for clean big sounds,
Put a mic (57/1073) very close with the case closed and on it's back. You'll be amazed

yes!

i GIGGED with one of those once. i propped the case up, dropped a mic dropped down in there, buttoned it up and off i went. nasty blues tone and kewl tremolo to boot. haha, it sure messed with people's heads! "hey, where the hell's the amp?!?"
gotta do that again someday for yucks....

I have two 1966 ac30 top boosts. My fave amp despite its ridiculous weight!

I still need to try that trick - taking a whole drum bus into the Dynacomp. Apparently it's amazing.

for some reason the search didn't take me to the original thread: I'm always interested in uses for the "ping pong paddles"

Do you have to flip the phase when you put the PZM 'round back, or is the purpose to mix in the out of phase signal? I've been mixing in a little out of phase gutar amp signal to thin out a guitar that's taking up too much room.

Thanks!

I work alone writing and producing television music, so my situation is a little different, but I almost always go to a '64 Blackface Princeton and an assortment of pedals. This amp is surprisingly versatile and QUIET!! It works really with my Fender Rhodes, too.

For bass I use a Silverface Twin Reverb from the early 70's alone or through a cab, it's essentially a Fender Showman with added circuitry in channel two. Rhodes works well here, too.

I've got a SF Champ for natural distorion, a Pro Jr, A Velocette and a few others.

You'll always need amps!! A caveat, maintaining this stuff can get expensive.

I liketo use a blonde bassman, it sounds great (Brian Setzer and David Grissom use em). Tried a Blackface Tremolux once, sounded really nice. I prefer to use heads and play with different cabinet combinations because one can drastically alter an amps tone by changing the speaker.

I'm still a big fan of this Randall MTS system. I have the Rectifier, Blackface and Ultra Hi Gain lead modules and it's quite versatile. My combo version is definitely a bit bass heavy, I'm just going to patch a graphic eq in and be done with it.

I've always prefered the Blues Jr over the Pro Jr myself... my secret weapon though is a Carvin Legacy head. IMHO (and it is indeed humble ) these things sound a helluva' lot more expensive than they are...

My favourite amp for the last few years has been a Fender Custom Shop Bass Breaker. It's the Master Built version of the 59 Bassman, with two Celestion 12" Vintage 30s rather than 4x10.

It's a fantastic sounding amp, but a wee bit temperamental!

Hey War.

I have been thinking about trying out one of the Randall systems for studio use only. I am not sure which to get, the RM4 rack, the RM100 head or the new combo unit (forget the model number). I was leaning towards the combo because it is 15 watts (correct??) and I would not have to use my (very cool but loud 70's ) Marshall 4x12 cab. Are you saying you have the combo unit and it is a little "bass heavy"??

That sucks if it is.....

Michael, my combo is the RM80 version which is 80 watts. Yeah, it's a bit bass heavy nothing crazy though! I'm going to get a little parametric or graphic and just patch it in and be done.

I know this particular one is discontinued and I didn't know they made a 15w model. I know they made / make a 50w called the RM50 but it's a 1x12 cab and I wanted a 2x12 for the studio.

I do not play guitar (I play around for fun!) and bought it solely to have in the studio as a versatile setup. It wins a lot.

It's a killer setup man, seriously my only complaint is the low end eq doesn't take out enough for my tastes.

The clips on Randall's site are very representative of the 3 modules I own.

I've been looking at Randall modular amp with a little curiosity...
Now that the electric guitar world has left the POD where it belongs (in a practice bag) and come to terms with the importance of having a moving coil exciting a real environment and then capturing that sound with a proper transducer, we have finally begun to experiment with modular analog amplification. I recently tried a Mesa Boogie Road King and I was amazed at with the tonal possibilites, it is a great instrument.
However, I've always leaned towards a purist approach with guitar amplification, and some of the best sounds I've ever recorded have come from very simple setups. I still swear by playing with different speakers and this is what makes me question the implementation of Randalls modular system in the studio. Live I'm sure it is great, like the Boogie Road King, however, half the joy of a blackface Fender Deluxe, a Marshall JCM 800, or an old Vox AC30, is the speaker configuation and its effect on the amps tone. I know it is a pain to set up 3 different amps and play around with mics, preamps, speakers etc, however, this is what will give you a great guitar sound....unlike the majority of PRS via Dual Recitfier sounds we have been hearing as of late...this was a sound i liked when I was 13, and that was a long, long time ago (before the recto was even around!!) Lets get some new guitar sounds happening!!!

sorry for the rant dfegad

Cool, thanks Warren. Wonder why this is?? We will see.

Hi Saskatchewan. I agree with you about speaker selection and such but that is really the cool thing with the Randall system, you have multiple amps to choose from and depending on the setup you can choose multiple power tubes for even more tone selections as well as still being able to pick your speakers. Seems like what you are asking for is tone choices and it looks like the Randall is a quality solution to give you just that.

I am really looking forward to getting one just not sure what one to get...

I'll have to go and actually play through one to see what I think. I love the modular idea, and power amp switching is a great thing. One question though, how authentic do the modules sound, or are they their own thing??

Maven Peal Ganesha

1 watt to 100 watts on a front panel knob ... SAG control on a knob ... any power tube combo .... 2 input sections ... a plexi or a champ ... the bomb.
