2 bus comp then limit

hello all.

first off, if i'm working with a project that will be sent to a mastering house i probably will not limit the stereo bus at all...maybe a slight bit of compression but nothing drastic.

that said, if the project will not go to mastering and i want my mix to compete with modern pop mixes (level wise), what is a good quality outboard stereo limiter that would be up to this task?

as of now i'm using an api 2500 inserted on the console stereo out to the cranesong spider A/D to a tascam dvra1000.

is there any benefit to hitting the 2500 and unnamed future limiter directly from the console stereo outputs as opposed to keeping the chain on the inserts?

also, as of now i'm using channel 1 & 2 on the spider for A/D conversion. the spider also has a 2 channel master A/D with inserts. would it be better to insert the comp and limiter there?

thanks in advance for any replies.....

your buss compressor should always be used in the Insert of the CONSOLE. I can see reason for putting the limiter after the main outs of the desk, this affectively makes the limiter post-fader, only active when the master fader is high enough to generate a level over the threshold.

However, I would expect that for most pop stuff if you're limiting on the mix, I would just put the limiter after the comp, inside the insert loop.

As for limiters. How much do you want to spend?

Also, out of curiosity. I've found the DV-RA1000s to sound better using their own converters most of the time. I own one, and love how the thing sounds all by itself. I have used the spider with a DAW though, and its a nice sounding unit.

under 2k for the limiters, i was just looking at the KOMIT 500 series comp/limiter.
looks and sounds groovy....

i have not tried the DVRA1000 A/D converters as of yet. i just got the thing last week. so far it sounds pretty sweet with the spider as it's A/D.

thanks for the insert insight!!!

just to see what would happen....

i sent a mix from the console main inserts to the 2500 to a pair of ADT toolmod compressors. i set the ratio 20:1, the attack all the way fast, release pretty fast, medium gentle knee and the threshold at -1 then slightly pushed the gain past unity.

the result is a decent little peak limiter. cool!!
