I was recording 'Snoopy', who once was the drummer in Love. Acoustic guitar and vox in my living room; the stupidest thing I heard that session was my PHONE ringing about 18" from his mic... but the lyrics right then were "ring, ring a bell" so he said to keep it!

Today I was recording a sopken guided meditation, a remote in her office, and at once point MY cell phone went off (Twin Peaks theme). She said, gee it's nice to know that happens to the consummate professionals too!

Not stupid but funny...

Had this week a new customer, a rookie with his first song, who wanted a mixdown. He wanted to be there and watch. I told him that's ok, but that I would like work without being disturbed all the time. You can already guess what's coming up...

So I roughly set up a mix after listening and labeling all tracks. There were 5 (!!!) layers for the main lead. I asked him which one "carries" the main character.

Him: layer/track 4
Me: ok (making it a little louder)
Him: layer 3 louder
Me: ok
Him: layer 1 too
Me: ok but layer 4 will be then too low in volume
Him: anyway layer 1 must be louder
Me: done
Him: now layer 2 is too low
Me: ok
Him: now the whole lead sound is way too loud
Me: oh no... strange (smiling at him)
Him: Ok I let you do your work

Live story: band's FOH guy goes on about how he's a "very quiet mixer", because his ears are still good, then puts in a pair of fitted plugs and proceeds to run the board into the red.
(But he had a kewl spectrograph app running on his iphone, right behind the meter bridge!)

Client: Man, I just don't like all this digital stuff. Things were better when I recorded on ADATs.

Me: Ummm ADATS are digital.

Client: Oh (silence)

Just like people who want me to "digitize" their CDs. Already done. What format would you like?

Just last week, during a session at a very grand studio, an uninformed visitor reffered to the console and outboard gear as "softwarez". I had to bite on my lip to prevent me from bursting out in a raging fit of laughter.

Same soundguy as the last story:
I show him my pair of 163s and explain about the slider.
His reaction:"do they sound like LA2As?"
(that guy is good for a couple more, but not-so-funny, stories)

I was engineering the final mix for a Jamaican record producer. After hours of adjustments and fine tunig, he sat back in his chair, took a long draw of his big splif and exclaimed.. "BOOST ALL FREQUENCIES"... So I turned up the volume and he nodded in final approval!

Brilliant. But I'd say that it's more like one of the greatest things ever heard during a session!

Another Best Thing Said

After way too many requests from the band to fix/change/improve things in a mix, I heard our engineer say "It's a mixing board, not a magic wand!"

Ok, here is another. Working with a "DJ" based band, they decided they would like to incorporate some real drum sounds to use alongside the loops and samples, so I arranged for a drummer friend to come along. Upon hearing this the girl singer, who was also involved in the production said, "Great, can you make sure he brings along a selection of rimshots, I like those!"
