ad/da help

so with schooling and personal use, and doing search on the forum im still hazy on the subject of ad/da conversion. i understand it at a basic level, ad converting audio signals to digital, da digital to audio..but i need help understanding the importance of each in regards to a system.

im in the process of upgrading my system and its just one of those things i never got around to understanding as completely as i should have.

so if i went the apogee route and got an ad16x, what will that accomplish for me alone, and what would the da16x be doing in this?

currently have bla modded 896hd that im looking to replace as i go so would start with either a rosetta 800 or an ad16x run via adat lightpipe out of the motu until i can get another piece with the added on xfirewire card so i coul ditch the motu entirely.

would i be able to add the ad16x to the motu and eventually add on the da16 or do i need both to fully function etc.

thanks to Josh i was able to get all the info i needed and settled on the system im going to go with.
