Apogee Duet with Protools?

Can the Apogee Duet be used as the interface with say, like the Protools micro?
I searched a bunch of threads and could not find the answer.

There is no digital I/O to connect Duet to a Pro Tools interface.

It would not be used to connect "to" a protools interface, but used as an interface in conjunction with protools.

Pro Tools software needs to see a Digidesign interface. You cannot use Duet with Pro Tools directly. My suggestion would be an MBox and if you wanted to use an Apogee, you could get an Ensemble to be used in stand-alone mode.

Or you could save a few bucks and get a 003... Check with your dealer for more options

I have a larger protools setup already. I know protools needs to see one of it's own interfaces.
So, as stated above, can the Duet be used as the I/O and d/a and d/a with the protools micro (the small dongle that digidesign makes).
I am looking for a small portable rig, and this would be a great setup if it will work.

The Answer is no.....

You can track with any other Core audio Application [like Logic or Cubase or whatever] and bring the raw audio files into PT after, if you must.

You cannot use any other hardware [other than digi-designs hardware] directly interfacing with PT LE, unless your talking about an MBOX or a 003 with another converter hanging over the digital inputs/outputs, so as to bypass the digi-conversion. The Duet has NO digital I/O, so the Ensemble or something like the API A2D would be a good move for these systems.

I know this is an old thread, but I was thinking maybe there IS a solution to use the Duet with protools:

Wouldn't it be possible to connect the Duet to a mac, and then, internally, route the audio stream coming from the Duet to the digital output of another device (e.g. the built-in output). Maybe this can be done with Jack OSX or an aggregate device...
This digital output would then be (physically) connected to the s/pdif input of the ProTools interface (M-box/digi003/...).

I haven't tried this myself (I don't own a Duet), and I should mention I read somewhere that some people have problems using the Duet in an aggregated device... But maybe someone can try this, and report here?

in theory maybe...in practice the latency will be magnified, probably to the point of unuseability.

Its just the wrong tool for this job.

Of course you're right about the latency - 3 interfaces are being used at the same time, in series. Still, the same idea could be applied to use the Duet's DA for ITB mixing; that should be a step up from digidesign's stock LE-convertors, if you don't mind the latency.

I'm not suggesting people should actually buy the Duet with this purpose in mind (apart from the fact I don't even know if it works), obviously there are better tools for this - I was just thinking out loud here... ..though it could be worth a try for anyone with a Duet and an Mbox laying around!

I'd hate to be rude here, but this idea gives me a headache.

You are asking for problems, as this is NOT the right way to use this equipment, and while there are no rules for the subjective part of recording, mixing, mastering, there are most certainly rules to follow for the connection and end use of a device, etc..... This is not going to work, its a waste of resources, and would not provide usable results for anyone.

I don't quite see the point in using PTLE at all, when Logic, or any other native daw that supports Core Audio DAE does what you need. Its not hard to export/import the audio into another software platform, if you really need to use PT for "mixing", there are a TON of converter interfaces out there that can work with a PTLE interface and achieve better results. The Duet is not one of them. There is zero point to trying to make the Duet do a job with PTLE, when it can do it with any other software platform.

so how would someone find out if there were BETTER d/a converters than the current offerings from digidesign that could be used for the front of ptle?

Buy a dedicated converter, not an interface.

There are plenty out there. The search function is pretty useful here.
