I borrowed one on a recent session. It was OK. Descent for the price but I wasn't in love with it. It is very possible that the mic simply didn't fit the music and is fine on other artists and styles. We were doing laid back, soft singer-songwriter folk type of stuff. Both artists have very similar voices so it's possible it would sound better on anyone else. Since we were tracking acoustic guitar and vocals simultaneously, I wanted to take advantage of the fig8 pattern so I could put the guitar in the null spot to minimize leakage. It was really hard to get a null spot at all. I've got a few spots on the tracks I cut with it where there are some weird sounds that sound almost clipped even though the track did not clip. Also, I felt it was too easily overdriven- these were soft singers and there's a few phrases where it gets slightly "fuzzy". Not like a full distortion effect but just a less clear, fuzzier sound. That is just my experience. I ended up not using it too much and stuck with other mics for the session. Others have had more positive experiences though. Try a search.

What are you thinking of using it for? I like mine - it's clear, full bodied, easily excited with duller voices (like mine). Hasn't worked so well for female vocals for me but I find it nice on acoustic guitar for a large sound. It hasn't become my go-to vocal mic like I'd kinda hoped it would, but I'm sure over time I'll get my moneys worth - it's not a bad mic - just maybe not a workhorse. |

Maybe I'm spoiled... but that mic doesn't have a roll-off nor a pad. That was one thing, you think it'll be a vocal mic, but without a pad, how do you really "vocal up" on it? It ends up being a room mic that you're singing into... don't it? I still say some of the sweetest vocals/close up acoustic instruments/high intensity scrutiny/style things I've ever done were through my 8000, just back in the days when it was new, before it distintegrated in my very fingers and slipped away, like the sands of time.....

The Trion 8000 is not particularly beefy sounding, but it does have a silky high end which works quite well on some sources. For the money, it's a good deal, and my second Trion 8000, the one I'm leaving stock, hasn't fallen apart yet. So far, it's worked best on one particular male singer with a sort of high, pinched voice, ala David Gray. The modded Trion is close to a Peluso 2247, but that's a different story. If you're into a somewhat mellow sound for vocals, the Trion 8000 would be a good choice. If you want to cut through a busy mix, there are other choices that would work better.
