Warming up your signals

Hi there,

Another slightly dumb question (this is getting to be a habit). If this has been covered before can someone please direct me to the link...

Would running a signal through, say, the line level input of a Neve channel do anything beneficial to it - would it impart anything of the pre-amp tone? (assuming EQ is NOT used, obviously that would make a difference) Or would the signal stay the same/get degraded?

thx again

You'll be better off making sure that you are using preamps meant to accept line level ohm and gain wise. Part of what makes neve stuff cool is the inductor based eq and you'd probably be better off using stuff that imparts a cool tone and is functional like an 1176, 1073 or something for the application you are talking. Any sort of line level you add to a signal is going to degrade the signal. Neve stuff happens to do so in a cool sounding way but it's still relativley subtle compared to what you can do with an EQ or Compressor.

I second the 1176.

Try running to analog, and really warm up that signal.

I do this occasionally on Vintech X73i. The "sound" on these types of preamps has a ton to do with the transformers, and the X73i line input does go through the transformers.

Excellent additional use for this kind of gear, even without using the EQ (which is great as well...)
