In alphabetical order (not order of preference--all are good in their own way):

Crane Song Ibis (love the color knob)
GML 8200 (best "scalpel" for surgery)
Manley Massive Passive (steeper learning curve but always sounds good)

YMMV

PS these were EveAnna Manley's recommendations and she was right. Thanks EveAnna.

There's a lot of great units out there, but here's 3 ideas for you that may provoke some reaction :

1. Goes without saying, vintage Neve or API (as long as they've been looked after - recapped and whatnot). Interestingly, I often prefer my Vintech X81's - very similar to Neve in the top end, but tighter and punchier in the low end - many older Neve modules often get too soft and smeared in the bottom end. I know some folks here have some ideological problems with Vintech - but they make great EQ's at a non-stupid price.

2. An often-overlooked unit is the Klein+Hummel UE-400. Can be found in several high-end rooms in London. Great sounding and powerful shaping abilities. Second-hand prices are often very low, if you can find one (I saw one for 400 pounds not that long ago - I'm kicking myself that I didn't jump quick enough!).

3. Across the mix buss, Prism Sound Maselec MEA-2. Designed by Leif Mases, sounds very clean indeed, as evidenced by use in many mastering rooms here in the UK. If you want colour, go somewhere else, but for just lifting your mix across the board so you don't have to use so much channel EQ - just the ticket! Notched too, so its great for recalls and L/R matching - you don't have to get the tone generator out like you do if you're using a GML across the buss. Not cheap though, and the cut/boost is limited to only 6 or 8dB, depending on which of the four bands you're using, so its not one for powerful sound-shaping on individual instruments. I guess it was only designed for mix-buss or mastering applications, and it does that job extremely well.

Slightly OT, but do you ever find the GML to be a real bear to align the L/R balance on with tones. Depending on which unit I'm using, the cut/boost knobs between the left side and ride side can differ by more than 3db to get it to line up properly. And sometimes you can turn the gain pots quite a bit before they do anything at all. Sure sounds good when you get it right in there though...

This is pretty easy to fix.

Buy a GML 9500.

Personally i wouldn't say the MEA-2 is totally colorless(just as i wouldn't say the same of the GML or the Sontec).

Neve 1081 and Pultec (for very coloured, dirty, different type EQing)

GML8200 (surgery)

Neve console (like V series and later) and SSL9000 J and K (Good all around eq, most versatile)

I absolutely agree with you. I wasn't implying that it was totally colourless. Just making the observation that the MEA-2 is very good across the mix buss for a number of reasons, but that those looking for some real colouration may want to try other units first (Massive Passive, Avalon 747, closely-matched Neve units, Tubetech multi-band, etc, etc...)

Neotek Elite
Neve 1073

Those are the three I use most in my place.
