What is a good TLM103 killer?

What would be a good mic that would kick the shit out of a TLM103 for the same price range? (it doesn't have to be, but maybe even multipattern mic) uses would be for general purpose.... some vox, percussion, guitar, etc.........

I'm open for suggestions....

I second the U195 suggestion. Sold my 103 last year to buy the Soundelux. Too bad the buyer of my 103 paid UPS with a counterfeit cashiers check and I got stuck holding my bag.

The U195 was so sweet however, that it took the sting out of losing $750 and I never looked back.

Good Luck!

Anything. If that answer is too sarcastic, how about another vote for the U195, or Gefell M930 would be a little closer to the mark.

I'll third (lost count) the 195 .. and add to that, a pair of 103 killers for the samish money .. ADK Hamburg and Vienna. Complimentary Neumannish/AKGish sounds. Cover lots of bases. IMHO.

The Microtech Gefell M930 can be had new for half the price of the TLM103 (at least in Europe) and is a great sounding mic in it's own right - well worth investigating! I love mine, and although I've not directly A/B'd it I work in lots of studios with TLM103's and I feel it holds up very well indeed.

Another nice mic you might want to check out is the Blue Mouse, although this may be a bit more expensive.

The Brauner Phantom C is in a different class altogether - an absolutely awesome mic, especially for voice-overs and anything where neutrality is required, but this is definitely more expensive!

i own both (and as you probably suspected they both are great), the gefell 930 has been seeing a bit more vocal use lately (although thats subject to change anytime), and the u-195 is getting more instrument stuff. i like both as overheads, in fact i just tracked some drums in the 'recorderman' setup with the u-195 over the snare and the gefell 930 as the 'side overhead'... i like it!!
really, they both are extremely useful.
good luck,
joshua
p.s. i would recommend calling mercenary a call and giving them both a listen so you can decide for yourself....

Hi

I've never use the 195 so no comment. Between the TLM 103 and the M930,
the M930 sounded smoother on the top end.
