Quantegy Closes

Shall we have a moment of silence. The story is on Slashdot:

http://slashdot.org/articles/05/01/0...&tid=188&tid=1

"Quantegy, the last manufacturer of professional reel-to-reel analog audio tape in the world has closed their plant in Opelika, AL leaving a reported 250 workers without jobs, according to the Opelika-Auburn News. Emtec (the former BASF, which used to be AGFA) was the last European manufacturer and ceased manufacuring in 2002. An audio account of the closing can be heard at NPR."

Maybe Tom Sholz was right when he stock-piled several year worth of his favorite tape brand. Whithin 5 years, everyone will have forgotten how to use them. Sad?

One thing that will not be missed however is the immense pollution that these tape companies produce.

I was raised in a suburb where nearby a BASF plant along the Sy-Laurence river in Canada. They had barred the area where they would dump their contaminated water into the river, but that sopecific are was such a wasteland - no animals, almost no vegetation and the smell...yuk!

Microprocessor plants pollute like hell too but you know what, this is why they build them abroad now. NIMBY syndrome (Not In My Backyard).

I think it's too late for that. Let me know if you find any.

What bud are you smoking? There are 5 wafer fabs in my town and the worst polution they generate is from the employees getting to work in their cars. It costs a lot of money to keep it clean, but folks don't mind paying an extra 10% or so for the environment....

They don't HAVE to produce pollution.

Eastman Kodak could potentially out pollute almost anybody but they recover all of their chemistry and literally only throw out distilled water from at least some of their plants.
