The Universal Audio LA-610 really impressed me as a bass DI. The compressor was handy.
It definitely is, as well as a guitar DI, and of course really nice for smooth vocals as well.

my best results were with a 610 so far.

Passive DI's yes.... keep in mind you need to reduce the level of the signal feeding into your DI by quite a bit to avoid clipping the transformer....

Group trims on a console are great for that.

Summit Audio TD-100 by far my favorite DI for passive and active sources. You can adjust the impedance to match the source. If I'm using recording one line I'll usually just go into a DI on one of my pres but if I'm splitting the lines for multiples this is my fav. And if you change out the tube for a NOS Amerex or Mullard it's even better.

I just bought a Demeter tube DI http://www.demeteramps.com/products/...es/vtdb2b.html -I love it. Bass is fat without being mushy. Costs £300 direct from Demeter plus £30 p&p and about £80 VAT and import taxes (I couldn't find a UK supplier).Took about a month to get to the UK but worth the wait.
