Thread Starter | Eq questions... APi,Lil Freq,Avedis
I'm on the hunt for a decent outboard outboard eq.Main use would be in mixing from a DAW and maybe tracking(Drums,Bass) as well. I already have an Averill Lunchbox and a API 560b graphic and a few empty spaces. The 560 is cool but I don't use it much as I thought I would. I've been looking at the API 550b.The Avedis Eq ,The Speck Asc w/transformer and maybe Empirical labs Lil Freq( if I can stretch my budget). I've never heard any of these units in person but trying to get a feel for what each one strong and weak points are.

From your list: 1) Empirical Labs Lil'Freq is too new, so getting a true users opinion will be near impossible right now. Also price wise its double what you are comparing it to. 2) The API550b is useful even though i prefer the 550a paired with a 560 on drums and bass. 3) The Speck ASC to me is ok, i personally wouldn't put it on the same list unless i am looking at EQ's under $1k. 4) Avedis EQ-no personal comment If price is an issue, than my choice would be a used 550a(around $850 street price) and a 560(not a 560B). If price isn't an issue, than you are on the wrong forumn and should be posting this question on the High End. |

I would definitely put the Daking on your list. People on this board swear by the pre, but it's not to my taste. I prefer Neve Pre's but the EQ is top shelf. I have a pair that I use with my Brent Averill 1272 pre's. It's not as harsh as the Neve's IMHO. I think the EQ width's are even wider so it sounds even more musical. If I could have a board full of only 1 EQ, it would definitely be Daking. YMMV |

Don't forget about the Great River EQ-2NV and EQ-1NV, Dan makes some kick ass gear. Also, the Buzz Audio MPE 1.1 mono EQ will be available probably in the next 2-4 weeks. |

If you really have to do it on the cheap you may want to look into the ADM eqs that are always up on the eBay for sale. I had a pr. for a few years and they were quite a suprise. They have color but, not to much. The top end is sweet. You should also call Avedis at BA and talk to him about his eqs. The are not API knock-offs. His intent was different and he could speak to this. He is a great guy. Straight shooter who has always steered me in the right direction even if it meant the cash didn't go to him. D |

I have 2 avedis e15 eqs, love them on drums, nice on bass, good for nice punchy sounds, i am looking for a different eq for vox, the high boost on the e15 sounds a lil harsh on vox. |

A thread back from the dead. I ended up getting a like new API 550b for a good price...I like it but still getting a feel for it. I've kinda rediscovered my 560 graphic as well..quit playing nice with it and got the pliers out..some wicked sounds are in there. Still want to hear the Great River though...it would go nicely with my NV2 preamp. |

Any users have more opinions on the Buzz MPE1.1? I'm looking for something clean and really tight, mostly for kicks and certains types of bass, maybe synths too. |

Pretty much describes the transformerless version of the Buzz MPE1.1. You can add some iron on input or output or both if you want a little more character too. | |
