Thread Starter | Since the Daniel Lanois threads are "read only" i have a question...
so i just watched the new daniel lanois dvd "here is what is". i really like the way the songs sound. we see the band playing live, all in one room (a daniel lanois trademark). my question is this: is what we actually see what we actually hear on the dvd, and is that the final album track? i just want to know if he really does work with all that bleed that can occur when you have a drum kit, a singer and an acoustic guitar in such close proximity with minimal baffling. hats off if that is indeed the case and that is the final sound that we "see". anyone have any insight? thanks. |

Yes, AFAIK the versions on the DVD are the final versions (sometimes they even include overdubs that were done later, for example, on here is what is, the echo-y guitar overdub was recorded later,, you can see that in the DVD extras). He uses pickups on his acoustic guitars as well as recording the acoustic sounds, so I bet on some songs we're hearing the pickup rather than the acoustic sound. On the album, the most noticeable microphone bleed is on "not fighting anymore", where you hear Brian Blade's snare come in through the vocal mike almost more strongly than the vocal itself!. Apparently that was a guide vocal from an early take (the one on the filmed version) that they finally decided to go with. It's almost used as a sonic feature of the song! In an interview he has mentioned that he is not per se against bleed and that when recording Wrecking Ball, Emmylou's microphone (a sony c-37) caught spill from other microphones in a great way that reminded him of old Crystals records produced by Phil Spector. Hope this helps, maybe other people can add other angles to it Santiago |

No problem, it's not a very obvious abreviation and it took me a bit of time to work it out myself when I first heard it! ![]() Santiago |
