| quote i found fascinating Below is a quote from Mr. O. He knows a ton, so I'm kind of re-reading it and trying to get it into my head. The last line I find particularly intriguing. So many people are trying to get "out" of the box to sum. But is Mr. O. suggesting the exact opposite here? In any event, it's a great 2 paragraphs: quote: "Anytime you mix two analog signals together, you lose 6 dB of level that needs to be made up. At some point the internal level drops below the level the signal entered the console at causing a loss of dynamic range. Subgrouping is a way to keep the levels within a mixer well above the noise level. Summing is actually one area where digital potentially outperforms analog by a huge margin. __________________ Bob's work room 615 385-8051 http://hyperback.com" |

| perhaps it's like the early (and sometimes present) analog vs digital debates... it's just what we're used to hearing - so it just sounds more 'right' doing it OTB. I'm still trying to make it work ITB for now... but I'm not quite convinced yet. "-) |

| Except AGAIN... i can compare desk out, that is, real time unrecorded, live sound, to the digital encoded and decoded sound. that's not a question of what i'm "used to". It's a question of what it sounds like relative to the original. And similarly with summing... Have you tried comparing your mix in the box to one done with a summing box or through a desk? One either sounds better to you or it doesn't. There's no more to it than that. I suppose I never understand these arguments in which someone tries to explain why I either should not, or really do not, prefer what I prefer.

| random comment...I think the OTB sound has alot more to do w/ the effects used and the workflow, rather than actual digital vs. analog Summing... ![]()

| GP, > "Anytime you mix two analog signals together, you lose 6 dB of level < Actually, it's more like 3 dB, and that's an average. The only time it would be 6 dB is when both signals are exactly the same. --Ethan
