Anybody catch "Classic Albums: The Band" the other night on VH1 Classic?

I'm a huge fan of The Band so when I found out this was coming on I had to watch it. Anyway, I saw some pretty interesting things during the show. Apparently it was recorded in Sammy Davis Jr.'s pool house in L.A. The room really wasn't even that big and the band was all set up in one corner.

Anyway, I saw a couple of pics of the console during that show. Anybody have any idea what kind of console that was? It didn't appear to be that big. Anybody else catch this show? If not, you might be able to find it in pieces on Youtube. Pretty interesting viewing.

Great record, great Band, and perhaps the first Project studio recording?

I particularly like the solo Robbie version of "dixie" on the piano.

I feel a Last Waltz session coming on again.......

Oh yeah, tell me about it. They're one of my favorite bands so this last saturday, when I looked on the tv guide, I saw that the Last Waltz was coming on followed by the Classic Albums show. Needless to say, I was pretty loaded by the end of watching all of that. Good times.

Yes, yes and no. Project studios go all the way back.

Damn! Was it "the brown album"? That one is definitely on my desert island 20 list. I'll have to keep an eye on VH-1 for reruns.

I thought that was done in Woodstock.

Slightly off-topic, but I just got the new Levon Helm disc. Don't know if anyone else has it, but I'm definitely digging it, especially his version of the Steve Earle track 'The Mountain'

I think you're thinking of the "Music From The Big Pink" album. I think that was done somewhere in upstate New York, possibly even Woodstock. The brown album, "The Band" was done in Sammy Davis Jr.'s pool house in L.A. "The Band" is the album that VH1 Classic (not VH1) did their show on. They usually show reruns quite a bit. I think the Last Waltz has been on twice in the last two months. You also might be able to find the Classic Albums stuff on Youtube in sections. I've found other stuff that way before.

actually the scenes with Levon and John Simon are in front of my soundcraft 1624... I had that at Levons house in Woodstock for most of the nineties when we were making the later day Band Albums....... I still have that console up in my loft... was just thinking of selling it...lot of history on that board

Actually, I meant the console that you see in the black and white pictures of the band that were taken during the "The Band" sessions. I'd like to know what console was used for those recordings.

However, that's still pretty cool that you have that old Soundcraft that was used for the later stuff.

ah yes... You know I have a recollection of the console being a Gates? I remember having some old gear in a closet at my old studio that Garth had in his basement.. mostly disassembled but i believe that some of that was from the console in the picture .. I'll have to check that....I think he got it from Capitol and was told some of it had been used on Frank Sinatra records

cheers
