Merry X-MAS, Happy Holidays, and all that stuff...

Wishing You and Yours the Gearslut-iest of Holidays and Happy New Year!

In order to keep this remotely on topic for this forum...

What's the single best thing you've learned and/or bought gearwise this year?
(besides "Bah Humbug" to credit card limits)

Chris

P.S. Special thanks to Jules, moderators,

acknowledgement.

Merry X-MAS!

Single best thing I've learned this year: What ribbon microphones can do for you.

Singel best thing I've bought this year: Tie: Fender Rhodes Stage 88 MK I (1971) and CraneSong STC-8. And of course the Royer 121 and AEA R84's. Double-tie......

And thanks to the people involved in managing/moderating/contributing to this forum.....it's a real fine place to hang out! Hope you all have a nice holiday.

I learned that 16 Real Traps and 2 Mini Traps were not the insane gamble to purchase I thought they might be. In tandem with a very thick 'drum carpet' and some rolling gobos they have turned a small low ceilinged office into a fine drum tracking room that I get complimented on weekly. (even for things like string quartets too)

re - P.S. The pleasure is all mine! Thank YOU!

Happy Holidays to all of you.

I've learned, for yet another year, that there is always more to learn.

Thanks for providing for such a great community here, Jules.

P.S. dj, get to work. How in the hell do you find time to post so often? Over 2,300 posts in approximately nine months-WOW!!!!!

Merry Christmas to all.

Best purchase is uh...one of the following:

Sonar Producer 4
Subwoofer

Things I have learned:
The best mixes start with a great sounding room.
Bass and Kick are the most time consuming part of the mix. Followed by toms.
Vocals are the most time consuming of tracking, if the vocalist can't sing. (Autotune is not necessarily a bad thing)
Good preamps are a necessity.
Bad tracking rarely EQs into something I like.

The recording industry needs more talented musicians and singers to keep engineering alive; preferably artists with day jobs to pay for recording.

And thank you Jules, for providing me with a diversion from all the things I should be doing.

This year I've learned that it is futile to fight against iLok. I've learned that when you lose a mentor you wish you would have taken the time for one last chat. I've learned that with each year my 'short list' gets shorter. I've learned the value of family. I've learned more on this forum than I can recount.
Thanks to Jules for keeping this the best.
