Any tips for "nailing"/ recording this guitar tone...

YouTube - Physical - Nine Inch Nails

The low thick palm muted powerchords that come in at about 23 seconds.

I have always liked that sound, yet re-creating leads to a thing sound. Advice for a beginner hobbyist?

I LOVE ribbons for this situation! The recording sounds like it could be a 57 though, so just make sure you get your mic positioning right. One thing i'de suggest is to isolate your cab from the floor. Also, don't forget that the bass is reinforcing those palm mutes, so make sure your arrangement is right.

That could be it. I have young ears, could not quite separate if a bass was re-enforcing it.

Could you explain isolating your cab from the floor a little. Thanks in advance.

Record a DI and reamp it through a bunch of different tones... phase align together and mix to taste.

Part of the secret is layering NOT more gain... more gain/distortion generally especially with solid state amps = more odd-order harmonics = thinner/harsh

According to some interviews, the broken EP was all DI.
Mainly a JMP1 thru a zoom 9030.

It takes sense if you listen to it, it has that zoom "sound" going on, and it's quite raspy on its own.
