AT4060 v's ADK CE & Pearlman TM1 - help needed.

Hi

I will soon be putting my hand in my pocket and getting myself a mid-priced tube LDC for recording my vocals. I have a Justin Timberlake kind of voice (I'm not saying I sound like Justin, just a ball park reference).

I've heard nothing but praise for all of these mics (TM1 has least amount of press & users as it is very limited), but not from anyone who has used more than one of them.

I'd love to try them all before buying, but this is not possible, or at least not at the same time.

Any opinions from those who have used more than one of these will be most appreciated.

Cheers

Unless you're thinking of importing one from the US I wouldn't bother with the 4060. It's way overpriced in the UK. (£1,575. Which is around the $3K mark). You can get a Microtech Gefell M990 or UM92.1 (which has three patterns, compared to the 4060's mere ONE) for less than that. And a UM900 (5 pattern) for only £200 or so more.

Thanks for the heads up! I was aware of this and I would definately be getting the 4060 from the States for between $600 & $700. With VAT, Duty and shipping this should still be under £600!

Well I tried the 4060 on vocals a few years back and was comletely underwhelmed. The ADK CE is really great on everything I've tried it on...female/male vocal through A designs pre has worked for me. Also it's one of my favorite acoustic gtr and mono overhead mics.
Right now it's my favorite mid priced tube mic-although I haven't tried the peluso or pearlman.
Micah
p.s. I think it would add some nice"weight" to a Timberlake like voice.

The 4060 and the CE are two completely different flavas and the my guess would be to go for the CE or TM1 for your Timberlake voice. I have both the CE and 4060, and the CE spices things up nicely and the 4060 keeps things clean.

Good luck,
Stefan

Thanks guys,

It looks like I'm leaning towards the ADK CE then. I'd love to give the TM1 a go, but I think with import duty, VAT and shipping, I'd be looking at about £800, and my limit is £600. The CE is £700 in the UK, but I'm working on that!

Stefan, I don't surpose you are near London are you? I'd love to pop round for half an hour and give both mics a go! I'd buy you a cake!!

Cheers all,

'Season's greetings'

I hear tell that "JT" uses a Neumann 87...not exactly the vocal sound I like, but there it is.

If you really have a JT style of voice....you should see about a C-800G. Not sure what your budget is...
I've heard that Justin has his own little precious U47, can't remember where I heard it though, so you have to take that with a big bag of salt.

Thanks guys.

Wow, a vote for the AT4060 over the MG 92.1s! The MG and Sony are way out of my budget (£600/$1200) BTW.

I'm not actually trying to achieve the Justin Timberlake vocal sound, as I'm not that in love with the way his voice was recorded/mixed. It's not that he sounds bad (far from it), or anything, it just sounds a little too foward, compressed and 'over produced' for my tastes??

I like the way Nat King Cole sounds and some Buddy Holly and a lot of the 50's/60's crooners! I'm not actully a big fan of the music, but the production was sweet!!

Cheers

The Pearlman TM1 is by far a better mic in my opinion than the At4060. The 4060 is a good mic but a bit brittle on the top end for vocal although that can be remedied with a little eq. The TM1 is pure silk even with the original unmodified version.
