Does Gearslutz have an irc? Ive tried searching for it and read the FAQ but cant find info anywhere. would be very cool. Alex |

Its on the list of things to try again. We have had chat rooms before but it seemed to be impossible to find one platform that worked for everyone and sadly whatever was chosen slammed a door shut in some peoples faces and caused a lot of bad feeling... So it would be typical for us to get a new one going, but with you in the small group unable to access it! There are many buggy, poorly supported (basically abandoned) chat room softwares that never get updated and come with back doors wide open for hackers.. The trick is to pick a supported, constantly updated safe one that can access the user name database for automatic log in etc... Thanks for reminding!

I love IRC as well. It would be great to all be able to chat to chat in one place in real time..... What about a web based Chat box?

A Gearslutz chat room needs to be well supported and not some POS abandoned freeware that hasn't had an update since 2006 and who's designer is now 'bored with it'. It needs to also link securely to the forum database for auto log in, member names and moderation (if people get abusive etc) The ability to transfer files would also be good as folks will like to trade kik samples, plug in presets with people they are chatting with. "Moderated chat" would be good, that way we could pre book VIP's for on-line, live Q and A sessions. Oh and it needs to work with everybody's browser type, OS, computer + all PDA's and Iphones. Simple really! ;-) Suggestion for software will be looked into, many thanks! (but no one start an unauthorized Gearslutz chat room please..Thanks) |

I think the whole value of the site is posterity...I'm not so interested in just gabbing with other people online. I'm more interested in learning, and I think having a post that will stay online for a long time and be indexed by google makes people put a bit more effort into their posts. Another thing is I don't have to be present to read everything that is of interest to me, I can search for it later. And "in crowds" don't develop since everything's out in the open. So I'm not interested in a chatroom and I don't suggest one be added in general. |

It only suits some people. A smallish number of members will be regulars on it and a lot of people will never use it. Its a reasonable request to have one IMHO. But compatability issues in the past made it a real headache. So the words "chat room" raise my blood pressue a little... |
