Question Drum recording tips needed for a small tracking booth

Hi,

I'm about to record a drum kit. Since my tracking room is a small one (2.0 m wide 5.0 m long 2.5 m high) there's no other chance than placing the kick drum so close to the wall.

What kind of problems may occur in this situation and what are your reccomendations to overcome.

Thanks

That's about the same size as my little tracking room.

If your room is untreated, you're probably gonna have loads of frequency cancellation and build up, so start by placing the drum kit where it sounds the best by itself.

When the kit sounds good it's all a matter of putting up mics really - have you tried the Recorderman setup? It works wonders in my room.

In my room there’s a quite pronounced build up at 80 - 100 Hz but it often suits the kick very well. I have installed 2 helmholtz resonators to tame the room a bit however, which I recommend if your room is too reflective.

Cheers and happy recording,
Lasso.
