| Lives for gear | Bonham, Zeppelin, Shirley, FATSO - how to make a huge 5.1 DVD mix
Apparently, just take some API, an 1176, a Fairchild, and 6 channels of Empirical Labs FATSO through an SSL, add some Bonzo and you're all set! from producer Kevin Shirley's website, regarding the Led Zeppelin DVD and CD released last year: "Shirley mixed the CD and DVD at SARM West Studios in London using an SSL 9000 J. He had dozens of effects at his disposal, including API compressors and EQ, but he says he didn't use too many because he wanted to capture the essence of being at a Zeppelin concert. “I used an 1176 to compress Robert's vocals, a Peavey Kosmos Pro on Jimmy's guitar, and on the drums, I used an old Fairchild stereo compressor. One of Jimmy's comments when we started was, ‘I want to hear lots of cymbals,’ and I used the Fairchild for that. The kick drum chain was pretty complex, and on the bass and keys, I used a variety of the old compressors, as well as six Fatso compressors chained together for the surround mix and the SSL console compressor for the 2-channel mix. They sound great; they are clean and variable and dynamic." more details at http://www.cavemanproductions.com/lzmix.html

Absolutely!! It's one of my favorites (I'm a big Zeppelin fan) and I think it sounds huge, plus I like how Kev made shows from many different venues and eras sound consistant. I'm totally digging the new 5.1 mixes Daniel Lanois did on the Peter Gabriel DVD "Play" - it's majestic. -gil |

Yeah I absolutely loved that DvD also, I never thought Zeppelin sounded so good live. I wasn't a big fan of The song remains the same but this DVD rocks and sounds great!

Song Remains the Same was a big disapointment - but I still bought it when it came out on DVD anyway. I saw it in the theatres "back in the day", it was somehow more tolerable in an altered state of mind, so to speak. I waited a long time for some decent live Zeppelin. and the new DVD does not disapoint. -gil |

Kind of the impact Voltron had on me when I was a kid. Somehow I was TOTALLY captivated by it at 12 years old, but I downloaded a few episodes of it, and felt ashamed... Ok, Maybe not the same thing.
