| Lives for gear | There's a ton of stuff I like, but it's all probably due to nostalgia... And speaking of nostalgia, here's a great link for Beatles fans http://www.scifihifi.com/beatles/ - all the Christmas records they sent to their fan club in the 60s (courtesy of Lee Flier, who posted it on another forum). |

| Okay, maybe I shouldn't admit it here but I actually have a HUGE collection of Christmas music. There's just something about the weird blend of kitsch, sentimentality, heartfelt sentiment and goofiness that I find irresistible. Faves? Dang, that's a tough one. Sure, Vince Guaraldi's a classic. Nat King Cole and Bing, of course. But what about... 1) ELVIS! His first early Christmas CD really swings, and his much later one is very Vegas... 2) Gotta give it to Ray Charles. Hip arrangements, and Rays' usual vocal fabulousness. 3) Rock n' Roll Christmas - Dr. John, Huey Piano Smith and the Clowns.. (I think) 4) James Brown Fave jazz Xmas - Jimmy McGriff, Ramsey Lewis Trio, Miles Davis' "Blue Xmas", Jimmy Smith, Santa Claus is Smokin' Reefer (Slam Stewart) Blues Xmas - Lightin Hopkins, Detroit Junior, The Ravens "White Christmas", Christmas in Heaven Novelties - Here Comes Fatty & His Sack of Sh*t, The Yobs (FILTHY), Little Johnny Snowflake, Santa Claus is a Black Man, & SO MANY MORE!! Okay, it's a sickness. Anyone looking for good weird compilations, check out Eddie G's on Sony I think (we used to work together - first guy I ever met who had more Xmas stuff than me). Maybe if I get around to it, I'll post my friend's "Santa Oddity" parody of Bowie's Space Oddity... Oh yeah, and if you like country, check out The Tractors, Johnny Cash (of course) and Emmy Lou Harris (ditto)... ![]()

| Low - Christmas I know Low probably represent the antithesis of what many people round these parts (GS that is) are trying to achieve but I think they are an incredible band and that is a great record. One of my all time favourite pieces of music is Pearsall's double choir arrangement of In Dulci Jubilo (about a million miles away from Mike Oldfield's travesty) but I have never heard a good recording of it yet. The BBC singers recorded it two years ago but the recording was pretty poor, it displayed all of the common aesthetic problems with the "accepted normal procedure" for recording choral music imvho. I will record one day. Oh yes, then the world will see... ![]()

| If I may brag a bit, I recorded a cd a while back that still stands up pretty well. As always, another jew producing a Christmas album. I felt like Barbara Striesand or Kenny G.Angeles Bending Near the Earth - David Maloney

| Anything by Frank Sinatra or Nat King Cole. BTW, I just heard this jazzy version of "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch" on the radio last night - it's a female singer - anyone know who did this wonderful piece? |

| Bing Crosby rules for Christmas songs. Happy Xmas, war is over by John Lennon. One of his best vocal performances. Yoko's lame voice cheezes it up at the end. But it's still a great song. |

| Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas" is about it for me. But few things put me more in that mood than Nast King Cole's rendition of that Mel Torme classic "The Christmas Song". I covered this old little known Louis Armstrong tune, "Zat You Santa Claus?" that's pretty cool, last year. "Santa Baby" by Eartha Kitt shouldn't be denied.

| A few personal faves that haven't been mentioned yet.... -the Pretenders' "2000 Miles" (only incidentally a Christmas song, but a great little record) -Jethro Tull's "Christmas Song" (yes, it's a self-righteous kiss-off, but such a good one) -the Everly Brothers' "Christmas Eve Can Kill You" .... an early-70's Nashville tearjerker with a quirky arrangement and gloriously over-the-top vocals. Worth a listen if you can find it. Thumbs up on the Bing/Bowie "Drummer Boy" and "Santa Baby." Always fun. Speaking of fun, somebody mentioned Trans-Siberian Orchestra--one of the co-founders is an old college buddy of mine and we catch them on tour when our schedules match up. If you're not too cool to enjoy a good old-fashioned arena rock spectacle done with maximum professionalism and a bit of self-deprecating humor, you will definitely have a good time. |
