tube mic pre that's both warm AND clear

I've tried a few of the cheaper tube pre's - peavey vmp-2, a digitech vtp-1, and the aphex 207. All of these exhibit the same general character - some warmth but also a lack of clarity/focus/detail that makes them ordinary sounding, even flat. Also tried a DW fearn, and that's more like it, but even one channel is out my price range.

So where to look as far as high end stereo tube pre's that are detailed as well as warm sounding? Just looking for ideas in the $1000-1500 range used...

thanks

UA Solo 610. Clean, clear, and organic. I bought mine new for $800. Try one.

the 610 sounds cool. It seems to be a popular choice for bass guitar DI...how about recording mic'd guitars?

I'd use it for anything. Bass, acoustic guitar, strings or vocals especially.
