heavy guitars

How to get that heavy distorted sound of Kings X, Creed, POD,...

Which amps, mics( setup?), preamps, use of DI (palmer...).

I have api, focusrite428, slam, trident a range, amek 9098... preamps at my disposal!

mics: 57, beta57, senn 609, beyer 201, beyer ribbons, neumann 147, brauner vm1, sp b1, ..

Do you use dynamic, condensers,...?
Do you need muck eq?

comps:distressor,fatso, dbx160xl,..

so far i had best results with sennheiser 609 into api, but i still don't have that punch and cut that i want!
It still sounds too whimpy
I don't have the best room but still at close miking it shouldn't make that much of a difference

thanks

King's X used a 12 string bass - which added a lot of power to the guitars. Sometimes it's the bass that slams it.

The best way I've found is the way Andy Sneap does it:

1 sm 57 + Your favorite mic pre and Qaud track the performance. Sounds huge if the player is any good.

I always run a reamp track incase I'm not happy with the results. You can always throw like 10 mics on the cab, phase check them, and remamp that if you need more tonal options or don't like what you have.

As for amps... I highly recommed Mesa Boogie.

I love Triaxis, Road King, and Dual Rectos from Mesa

I've had luck with Peavy 5150 heads too.

Sometimes its cool to have multiple amps with a different mic on each and sum it together (mix to taste).

best gtr sounds..... studio

Gisbon SG - Fender Pro Junior amp - AEA R84 - sennheiser 609 (or sm 57) - Chandler TG-2....It took a while... but I found The shit

Incidently, recently finished mixing a track where a few of the DI'd guide gtrs lasted till the end...back when we started I put these thru UAD-1 Nigel (just for a vibe)...they stayed in on the final mix...sounded great for the song...the performance/sound just worked

andy sneap is THE MAN when it comes to heavy gtrz.....period.
if any of you have heard the latest exodus or lock-up cd's you know what i mean.

i dont get to record very many guitar players that are good enough to quad track though. you have to be very tight with yourself for that.
