patchbay: half-normal with unbalanced input

I have one problem with an unbalanced synth that is connected via a half-normalled routing to a balanced input of my mixer.
Problem:
- I get a very weak signal with a lot of noise/hum.
- However, when I use two patchbay cables to connected the outputs of the synth to the inputs of the mixer (and basically use the same routing, but bypass the half-normalled connection) everything is fine, i.e. I get a good stereo signal.

What would be the proper way to hooking up an unbalanced signal and using the half-normal connection?

Do I have to remove the negative phase in the half-normal connection?

Thanks,
Dirk
