Is my 6' ceiling height basement ok as control room

Hi all,

MY actual control room is in a 10x10 with a 10 foot ceiling. I'm thinking of moving it to the basement wich is nice and big BUT i'm stuck with a 6 foot ceiling. Will the ceiling heigth cause a problem ??? Also, any of you guys tried the Mini-traps, i have a major bass problem in the 10x10 room and need to address it if i'm not moving to the basement.
From my mixing position the bass response is much less than if i just move 3 feet back !!! And last, what's the recommanded distance from my Dyn BM15A ??? Thanks

The reason you have bass issues in your 10x10x10 room is becuase a perfectly symetrical room is the worst ratio of dimensions for a control room, since it lends itself best to room modes. If you stay in this room it may help to modify the dimensions of the room before you spend anything on those bass traps. I'm no acoustician, but I did read up a lot on this stuff before I built my studio. Also, since I've read and noticed that lateral reflections are to be avoided the most (as opposed to vertical) you're probably better off in the basement with some sound dampening on the ceiling between yourself and the monitors which would be set up equidistant from the left and right walls. Check out the "Master Handbook of Acoustics" by Everest for some serious info on this stuff. Hope this helps.

Two AEA R84's on drum overheads is a good cure for a low ceiling.

In my experience!

Take's care of the high's

if you must use the room, go with really small monitors and check for bass troubles on headphones.

self.

Well, my basement more 6'6" but i think i will stay in my 10x10 room for now and wait til i can get a proper place.
I managed to pull off some good mixes in my 10x10 but the bass issue is still touchy. I thought of getting a smaller pairs of monitors ( i'm using BM15A right now )...but wich one...i thought of the NHT A20 at one point.

I'd rather treat the room with the higher ceilings. Minitraps are very nice.

as for mixing with a 6' ceiling... well...

[insensitive midget joke] How tall are you? [/insensitive midget joke]

you could set it up like an Indian restaurant, and use pillows on the floor instead of chairs.

Or if you own the house, hire a crew to dig out another several feet and lower the basement floor, or jack the house up some over the existing! Simple, right?

(sorry -- see line 1)
