monitor upgrade

I'm using the event 20/20 BAS monitors, and the bass response is not as good as I would like - if you hear the bass while mixing then you know your CD will be too boomy in other systems....

What's a good pair of monitors that have extended bass response, say around $1k?

thanks

Yes - you need to include PMC TB2's on your audition list.

If you are stepping up from 20/20, I don't think you need more extended low end, maybe slightly, but the point is in more acurate bas... well more accurate everything.

The problems with muddyness could be related with painfull 2-6KHz that events have. You may compensate that with 200-300Hz mud in order to make mixes to sound "smoother". That acompanied with low resolution and scooped sounding mids... ahh... to say it shortly, your problems might be elsewhere than you think.

In my exp. something like P33-A would be nice step up. I don't know genelecs or dynaudio or PMC though.

are you sure this isn't an issue with the space?

Possibly, as my space is less than ideal. I'm having difficutly translating the bass from my mixing setup (ghost with the 20/20s), but I mixing at a relatively low volume, to try and minimize any room interference...

I've heard many people complain about the 20/20 bass response as less than stellar, and I agree. Looking for active monitors around $1k - mackie, KRK? Something that will have better bass response.

The frequency response of your ears changes with volume as well. Low volume listening has less bass.

More bass response, as in being able to play lower frequencies, you'll prolly only achieve with a subwoofer system (2.1) for that price.
But accuracy with such a setup for $1k could be even worse then your current speakers...

Besides being less than ideal, you never mentioned how big your room is. I can't tell you how many times I've been to peep's home studios only to find big 8" speakers in rooms slightly bigger than a walk-in-closet. Furthermore, you might want to invest in acoustic treatment, as that's half the equation right there. You can spend thousands on stellar monitors and still render horrible mixes as a result of a poor monitoring environment.

That said, the new KRK V6/V8 (series 2) are absolutely stellar, IMO.
Dynaudio BM5A's are supposed to be a great as well, and the BM6A's, well, those are 'the ones' I would love to have.
I personally hate all Event monitors. My first pair of real monitors were the 20/20 bas, which sucked, and I recently had to mix a project where the monitors were the TR-8's, which also sucked. Just my opinion, which means squat if you like them and your mixes translate.
